Lesser known backyard inhabitants:

This chilopod rarely ventures out from under rotten logs and stones. To my big surprise I had never seen an animal like this and I had a hard time to find any literature on it.

What it turned out to be was in hierarchical order the following: Myriapoda; Chilopoda; Linotaeniidae (=Scolioplanidae, Dignathodontidae); Strigamia sp. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (http://data.gbif.org/species/) was of some help.

It might not be rare after all, it might just be confounded with Geophilids. Linotaeniids are represented with 7 genera in my region but occur worldwide.

Here follows a description of the predacious animal: it has 73 leg pairs, it is 60 mm long, gets slimmer towards the tiny head. It is blind, tergites are smooth and of the same length, the antennae have 14 segments.

Hallo Dieter!

Markus

Hello Dietrich,
Great and original macro, it is a pleasure for my eyes !
The "+++" : composition, nice subject, pose/shape, POV, sharpness, DOF, blurred BG, contrast on BG, exposure, warm colors, useful complementary note...
The "-" : nothing...

Hallo Dieter,
Peter

Me encanta.

Hello Dietrich,

An excellent image, beside being technically excellent, you managed to catch this little animal in a wonderful pose, excellent composition.

Thanks,
John

Hi Dietrich

I have to admit, I have never heard of this creature before. It sort resembels a blind centipede. But why does it have 73 pairs of legs and not 74 (lol)? Nature is wonderful and always full of surprises. Today I have learnt something, thanks.
Great shot by the way. I really like the light. Excellent composition and sharpness.
