Pond life

My backyard pond provides a habitat for five or six dragonfly species. Here we are tête-à-tête with a male of the Large red damselfly (Odonata; Coenagrionidae; Pyrrhosoma nymphula; Frühe Adonislibelle). It is the first one to show up as adult in spring. It is 35 mm long, the head is 4 mm wide.

The trick to keep this jittery bugger still for the shot was to look for it early in the cool morning when it was still hidden in the vegetation. As usual for me I used the dual dispersed flash that causes the muted reflexes on the eyes.

It seems as if you and Ulla had some kind of competition who could photograph a dragonfly the closest. This is fabulously close. The details are excellent and I just adore those red and black striped marble eyes. Once again a super image from your lens. Like before there are such a lot of details to observe and admire in this image. The clarity of the body hairs is just amazing. You have truly done yourself proud on this one. A super macro displayed and presented in a most delightful manner. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.
