Lesser known backyard creatures:

You witness the birth of an aphid here. The young aphids come out of the mother as prefabricated morphs. It is decided inside the mother whether the young female aphid will be a winged form (2.5 mm long) like the mother or a wingless like the one on top. The change of the forms is cued by the environment (daylength and other) of the mother. In fall a third morph, the male, appears.

During the summer the reproduction is parthenogenetic, there are only females involved. Reproduction starts as usual with a egg cell that undergoes meiosis and meiotic recombination. After that two meiotic products fuse, a diploid zygote is formed without the contribution of a sperm. Sisters are, because of the recombinations, genetically similar but not identical. The colony grows rapidly, it is merely decimated by the dispersal of the alatae, by aphid predators and parasites: some kind of "nation building" at work.

ID: The aphid is Macrosiphum gei (Sternorrhyncha; Aphididae) and it has Geum urbanum as a host. Species identification was done with E. Stresemann et al., 2005. "Exkursionsfauna von Deutschland 2" (The Aphidina key is particularly detailed in this guide).

Technique: as usual for me (macro lens, dual macro flash, Kenko extension tubes, monopod, ISO 100, RAW, covered sky). Post processing in PS involved lightening the background, stamping, combining parts of two shots from the same aphid group.

Hi Dietrich,
"Absolutely the birth of a nation", very aptly titled...This image with dominant greens make one of the most interesting captures that i have seen showing life in all its dynamism.I like those wings reflecting rainbow colours and the way life is beginning to move and take its final shape...the details are wonderful and the dark muted BG compliments the light green FG and the subjects excellently.Very educative accompying notes too.
Thanks for sharing..
Cheers

Great title BTW :)
Excellent image, these are some of the smallest macro subjects there are of course. Love the vertical frame, diagonal stem, and all those players adding interest..Nice study :}
Very good detail/DOF, color, flashwork, and BG to set em' off.

Hallo Dieter!

Markus
