Unknown guests at our house:
This is NOT a bumblebee as all signs let me think first. I got suspicious only when I noticed the halters (small, whitish, below the wings). It's a 13 mm Longhorn soldierfly (Diptera; Stratiomyidae; Stratiomys longicornis; Langhorn-Waffenfliege). In the yard it goes for nectar on the freely growing Aegopodium podagria.
Soldierflies occur near open water where they deposit their eggs. The species occurs widely from Northern Africa to Southern Scandinavia.
ID: the 50 or so stratomyid species in Central Europe are recognized by a small hexagonal field in the wing near the front edge. The species presented here has long black antennae (first segment 4x the length of the second) and two white dots at the occiput (barely seen here). And look at the eyes! Lit.: F. Sauer, 2001. Hi Dietrich,
Very nice capture of a bee, unknown to me so far. Sharpness and OOF background are definitive plus. Eye pattern is very interesting.
Best regards,
Ali
