The difficulties of shooting a flying beetle.

Some macro shots are really hard to do, you spend hours and hours fiddling with your equipment and doing many useless shots. In this particular case it was done in a matter of just two minutes: spotting the Bee beetle in the yard from the house, grabbing the camera, nudging the beetle to hop from flower to flower with a stick and Zap zap zap did it.

The picture reveals something about the flight dynamics: the forewings serve as rigid wings that create lift in flight, the hind wings serve as motors propulsing the beetle forward. By the way: on the abdomen you can see the dorsal heart tube.

The Bee beetle has already been well presented by others to the TN community (Coleoptera; Cleridae; Trichodes alvearius; Bienen-Buntkäfer).

Technical stuff: Macro lens, monopod, twin macro flash, one hand-held, both with light dispersers; covered sky; 1/125 sec; f/16; ISO 100;post processing in PS (exposition, crop, sharpen, reduce)

Hi Dietrich,
I'm not good at macros, I've tried a couple of times, and still sometimes when I find a remarkable subject I try- but it is hard as you say. Your macro shots are very remarkable. Your timing and the pose you captured, focus, sharpness, colors, lighting and contrast are very good. TFS
Have a nice weekend,
Selen

Hola Dietrich, excelente macro, por dificultad al captar un Trichodes alvearius con los élitros abiertos, buena definición luz y color. Un saludo

Hello Dietrich,
What an outstanding capture of thie beautiful Bee Beetle in flight. The sharp details are most impressive and the colours stunning against the colour of the Scabious flower! Brilliant work! I've often found too that I get the best shots when I'm in a hurry and just click!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Dietrich,
Excellent timing and sharpness in this macro of a Chequered Beetle about to take off. Great POV showing all the salient features of this parasite on bees and it is nice to see the aerodynamic shape of the elytra: the Red baron indeed!
Thanks for sharing this delight,
Best wishes,
Ivan

Hallo Dietrich
Time was my biggest enemy lately, and I have lots of catching up to do. Your flying beetle is just magnificent. Really awesome in all aspects, but escpecially the bright colour. Detail of the fine hairs and the texture of the (front wings) are really stunning. A lovely presentation, worth a huge smiley. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
Anna

Hallo Dieter,
Anne

Hi Dietrich.
I am amazed with your great close-up shot and brilliant timing. I have met this insect many times but never seen with opened wings. DOF, details and sharpness are superb also as well as the vibrant fine colours. Once more excellent close-up from you. I am very glad to watch it. My congratulations.
Alexei.

Hi Dietrich,

Everything in this photo is excellent, but the bright colors of the insect against the relatively muted color of the flower really is wonderful.

thanks,
John
