The eyes, the eyes!

Discoveries in the backyard:
I've never even known the existence of these flies until I started to put anything under the macro lens that came my way. This is the 11 mm Burial syrphid (Diptera; Syrphidae; Lathyrophthalmus (=Eristalinus) aeneus; Augenfleck-Schwebfliege). They sit on wild growing Aegopodium podagraria. The larvae are growing in putrid water, manure and so on.
ID: The eyes tell the story. There is a second species Eristalinus sepulchralis that looks similar but has separated eyes in both sexes.
Technical stuff: to avoid overexposure of the white flower I held one of the two macro flashes sidewise in hand. |

Hola Dietrich
Jacobo
