[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The "Berne-Fribourg" chapter of TN is reporting (continued):

The picture has been taken in Anne's garden in Valais. To photograph flying insects is quite bothersome. I will say (almost) nothing about the many rotten shots it took to get this one. Finally I got this Bristle bee-fly female of 10 mm length (Diptera; Bombyliidae; Systoechus or Systoecus sulphureus = S. ctenopterus) while it held still in the air. You may notice how the fly holds its hind legs up, using them as balancers.

ID: The last systematical paper on Systoechus species reported for Valais I found was from 1888 (Wiener Entomol. Zeitschr.). The cream color, the black bristles on the abdomen and the brown tinge on the wing base help to identify.

Technical stuff: Handheld, twin flash. In post-processing with PS some sharpening artistry was necessary (the fly is not entirely sharp) , trial and error the devise.

Du überraschst mich mit diesem Bild eigentlich nicht. Wer dich beim Fotografieren beobachtet, erkennt bald, dass dabei gute Resultate herausschauen müssen. Dieses hier ist etwas ganz Besonderes, denn ein so kleines Insekt im Flug zu erwischen, ist schon ein Kunststück! Zudem hat die Bearbeitung in PS offenbar ihre Früchte getragen.

Hello Dietrich!

This is real dream-shot. Bujanka [in Polish ;-)] captured while hovering over flower. Perfectly sharp and detailed with fantastic frontal POV. Yellow BG isolated main subject very well. Fantastic work.
BTW - I like your title also - I read the book and watched movie :-)
