ANTS (Formicidae, Latreille, 1802)

Together with wasps and bees they belong to the order Hymenoptera.
They are social insects and live in anthills. They are organized in tribes, which include a Queen, worker ants, soldiers ants and "lazy" males.
When the males become mature, they develop wings. It's why we can see many of these winged ants at the end of spring and the beginning of summer.Their function is only reproductive.
The worker-ants, which are females that cannot lay eggs, because their reproductive organs are not well developed, care for the eggs and the larvae.

Here we have probably a male Formica rufa , resting on a daisy.
In Europe we can find ca 180 different species of ants

I have seen these winged ants in my native place in the Himalays too, Anne.
The image of this male ant resting on a daisy is well captured and artistically composed.
The details and colours too are fabulous.
TFS and regards.

Hello Anne!
What an unusual picture of Formica rufa, typical species for forests and woods. I like this presentation as a documentary picture :)
Best regards,
Radomir

Hi Anne,
a great shot of this large Ant, something i shot recently myself. You have an excellent DOF here and an very exposure too. I don;t think we've had 'flying ant day' here yet..

Living in anthills strikes me. We have certain insects which are not ants and live in such hills but none such as this. Well seen on the white flower Anne. A very nice early on summer image with a combination of focal points. A nice dark background to help bring the subjects out well..

Aha Anne,

Peter
