This autumn I for the first time have visited Alushta, taking part in a scientific symposium. During work of a symposium many interesting meetings took place. This story about one of them.

Once at lunch time I with my wife had walked by seacoast to photograph seagulls. It was deserted. Only in the distance on a coast seagulls had sat lonely. Suddenly from the peak of nearest mountain (in Alushta mountains are situated closely near sea shore) crow had flown on us as a kite. It had landed in meters of five from us with a air of the indignant owner of these places with a mute question in a glance: "What do you want here? Get away". Crow had made some menacing jumps to our party. I, not paying attention to these threats, had quickly pulled out the camera and had taken a few shots. Seeing, that its actions did not make any effect on us, crow had departed away. And we had gone further to the seagulls.

We were very much amused with a air of this crow which had given us idea of title of this picture. In Odessa it is a lot of crows. The majority of them are well-fed and sleek. But this one is really street hooligan, bully.
______

Hooded crow

Description
The hooded crow, or 'hoodie' is now recognised as a different species to the carrion crow (Corvus corone). Both are around the same shape and size as a rook (Corvus frugilegus), but the hooded crow is easily identified by its two-colour plumage; the body is a dirty grey, while the wings, tail, head and bib are black. The calls are harsh and croaky, and include a 'kra-kra-kra', which may have given rise to the imitative name 'crow'.

Habitat
Open woodland, moors, agricultural land where there are groups of trees, town parks and shores where there are woodlands.

Biology
Like the carrion crow, this is an omnivorous species, taking a wide variety of food, including insects, molluscs, eggs from other birds' nests, berries and fish. Hooded crows are intelligent birds; in Finland they have been seen reeling in fishing lines left in holes in the ice to obtain fish. Other aspects of their general biology are very similar to that of the carrion crow.

Threats
Hooded crows are perceived as a threat to livestock, as they are believed to kill and injure young lambs and trapped sheep. Although they do cause some problems of this nature, the perception is greater than the reality, and they have been persecuted as a result for many hundreds of years.

Priviet Alex!

Very good portrait of this proud bird. I like is slightly aggresive pose and grey/black feathers. Nice, blurred BG.

I was in Alushta two years ago. Crimea is wonderfull place [especially Jalta, Bakhcisaray and Balaklawa], but Alushtan, concrete beaches were terrible :-)

This crow looks like a bully alright, Alexei :-). Interesting story about its antics!
Very sharp and clear image of the bird. In India, we have only fully black crows, so it is a novelty for me to see a black and white crow.
TFS and bye.

I really enjoyed your story, Alexei.
You certainly captured this crow's tough attitude perfectly.
Excellent sharpness, exposure, and POV.

Hello Alex,
Excellent this crow presentation!
I like a lot the pose of the bird, turning the head to look what's going on here...
So good the POV and the inclination of the ground.
The background works great with the DOF used.
Congratulations and happy holidays,
JM

travail excellent, bonnes couleurs, bons détails et super BG
bravo

Hello Alexei,
It is the first time that I see such a bird. I think that he looks quite unusual with this mix of white and black feathers. This is a nice detailed capture of it. I don't think that he is really cute but I like its pose in this nice composition. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Alex.
Great portrait of this ugly crow.
I have try to get pictures of the crows in here but they don’t like to let people get close to get a good shot.
Excellent colors, composition and details.
Good POV and BG.
Regards, Happy Holidays and Healthy and Rewarding New Year

JC

Hello Alexei,
Very good photo, I "like" the aspect disaligned and with his prepotent and arrogant attitude. Composition, details of the plumage are very good.
A big hug

Hello Alexi! I think this is technically outstanding photo with razor sharp focus, excellent exposure, nice colors and incredible DOF. You almost make this ugly bird look handsome.

Здравствулте! Alexi! Я думаю это будет технически выдающим фотоим с фокусом бритвы острым, превосходной выдержкой, славными цветами и неимоверным dof. Вы почти делаете эту уродскую птицу показаться красивейшими.

Hello Alexei

A very good portrait of this bad egg! I was amused by your notes.A very good capture of this thug.Good POV and DOF.The plumage (ragged as it is) is in very sharp detail.Excellent eye contact, and nicely composed.TFS

Rob

Hi Alexei,
the sharpness and exposure are good as well the POV.
I like the DOF too, a clean BG and the bird standout well.
This could be a young crow and he is not well seen bt the other crows and they picking on him, it's not unusual.
Well done. my friend.

Hello Alexei,
Seems like you have met a funny crow on your way!
I find the behaviour of this bird a bit strange when it comes to crows, but it gave you a great photo opportunity which you made well use of!
Beautifully composed image, good details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hola Alex,
Aunque el pájaro no es muy fotogénico, has conseguido realizar una toma muy bonita por el fondo, la luz y la nitidez. Un saludo

Good exposure, nice detail in the whites.

Greg

Alexei,
This is a really superb subject. I love the stray feathers - they go well with the uneven perch to suggest inbalance. However, you have balanced maintaining detail in your whites and blacks very well - that is something that gives me a hard time. The pose and DOF are also excellent.
Great shot!

HI Alexei,
I like your funny friend, seems he had a "bad hair-day" ;-) You were very close and the sharpness is very good, I like it, thanks.
Greetings and bye

Hi Alexei,
A very untidy bird! You have entered in a new area of bird portrait, capturing this one. Absoletely eye-caching, well composed and impresseive photo.
TFS, José M.

Hi Alexei
I really love the pose of the bird and the point of view and sharpness of your photo!
Happy new year dear friend!

Hola Alexei, wonderful bird, good sharpness, lovely details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Alexei,
I love this title of "bully" even though it is quite Scruffy looking.
In India and here in Canada they are pure black; in India they are tiny.
In Africa I saw some with this colourisation.
Is is sharp; well composed and very well presented.
Best regards, Mario.

Hi Alex,
Great DoF, great sharpness, very nice details, and very neat blurry BG.
Well composed picture.
Superb shot.

Ben Lakitan

Hi Alexei.
I like the head turned sideways pose, you have good detail, and the BG is blurred well.
The bird itself seems to lack proper contrast or clarity/i.e. hazy IMHO. Still a great capture.
Happy Holidays.

bonjour alex
c'est vrai que le titre est bien choisit,c'est en effet la premiere reflexion que je me suis faite:cet oiseau est vraiment ebouriffé,il s'est battu!
il se detache parfaitement sur le fond bien flou, une belle reussite.
laurent

Superb detail on the eye especially, colours and composition are great as well. An excellent capture.
Well done...
Cecilia

Hi Alexei,
One of best crow capture.Perfect details,POV and composition.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Alexei,
a charming, very lively portrait of a loveable little hooligan. I like the feathers moved by the wind.
Telling from my screen that may not be generalized I think slightly increased contrast might be tried to pull that noisy little guy even closer.
Thank you! My best wishes to you and your family.
With best regards,
Peter

Hi Alexei, the pose is good but I am surprised no one mentioned it being a bit too sharp.

See the white lines all around the bird, that means you have sharpened it too much. I was told that once and I really appreciated being told - so I hope you do. We learn by honest critiques, not praise critiques.

Have a happy New Year,
Janice

Bonne photo,bonne netteté,bonne année,bonne amitiés Thomas

Hello Alexei,
My first time to see a crow with white feathers. May be this crow is so busy with no time to groom. Well done and seen picture.
JC

What a great story about a [un]ruffled crow, Alexei.
This one looks like he has his eye on YOUR lunch.

Great posture and capture of same! Tfs, Jay

Hello Alexei !
This is truly a wondeful picture ! I love the pose and the attitude of the bird - exactly as you describe in your note. I also like his color, silver-grey on his belly. Composition, POV and blurred BG are wonderful. Excellent details, nice natural colors. Very well done !
Valerie.
