Another photo from Ukraine (Crimea Peninsula). These time from the eastern part of Crime near the city Kerch. It was also close to the place where the Black Sea meats the Sea of Azov.
I know that there is nothing special in these picture. It is just a jellyfish and the photos have some technical problems. But it was the firs time I saw that kind of jellyfish in natural environment. It was flouting close to the surface of the water. It was about 1 meter from a shore. The depth was also about 1m. The size of the jellyfish was about 40 cm in diameter. After 5 or 6 minutes the jellyfish sail away to a deeper part :-(

If you want to see the place where I took the shot take a look at the workshop.

I have some information about the ID. But I have forgotten to check it :-) Anyway I am not sure is it correct :-) So today only a note about the Scyphozoa.

Jellyfish are marine invertebrates belonging to the Scyphozoa class, and in turn the phylum Cnidaria. The body of an adult jellyfish is composed of a bell-shaped, jellylike substance enclosing its internal structure, from which the creature's tentacles suspend. Each tentacle is covered with stinging cells (cnidocytes) that can sting or kill other animals: most jellyfish use them to secure prey or as a defense mechanism.
Most jellyfish are passive drifters that feed on small fish and zooplankton that become caught in their tentacles. Jellyfish have an incomplete digestive system, meaning that the same orifice is used for both food intake and waste expulsion. They are made up of a layer of epidermis, gastrodermis, and a thick jellylike layer called mesoglea that separates the epidermis from the gastrodermis.

Hello Krzysztof,
I perfectly understand your fascination for these jellyfish; I think they are incredibly interesting and there is such a vast variety of them.
Your presentation of these is really excellent, very sharp and excellent details. The colours are very beautiful too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Czesc Krzysiek!

Rozumiem doskonale!

Feliz 2007!!!
Ricardo

Hi Krzysztof

These are some very interesting and amazing shots of this jelyfish!
Indeed it's quite rare to spot one so close to the shore and especially is such clear waters, so you sis an excellent job photographing it.
The clarity of the shots is impeccable, the natural colors are amazing and very beautiful and the strong contrast between the subject and the BG is exccptional.
Very well done!
I aslo like the WS photo - looks like a great habitat for many animals :)

Cheers and Happy 2007!
Horia

Hello Krzysztof,

Czesc,
In fact that's a very interesting and nice picture that just needs some treatment. I did it in a workshop, and hope you'll find it useful.

The jellyfish is very characteristic - it's Rhizostoma octopus (syn. Rhizostoma pulmo).

Very nice note and I like very much the additional shot.
Besides I recognize there our friend Janusz, who is also present on my two workshops from Albania ("survived the night before...") - on workshop 1 from behind :-), and on workshop 2 sitting first from the right :-)
Best greetings,
Michal

PS. Oops, I cloned only the upper blink, and left the other one :-) but still.... :-)

Hi Krzysztof,
Very good shots of this Jellyfish in its natural environment. The collage of 4 different views allows us to study it in great detail. Great notes and workshop photos. I love the location shot. Beautiful seascape.

Nicely done!Thanks for sharing.
Greetings Milos

I think you are bit self critical, in fact I find it a quite special picture, and I dont find evident technical problems, as you say.
Is is a very beautiful and big jelly fish with lovely colours and excellent shapness. I appreciate the 4 views.
Thanks and regards.
PD: while writing thsi critic I am listening a very curious polish pianist, Leszek Mozdzer :)

Hello Krzysztof,
skilfully made, very nice presentation.
Clear details, subtle natural colours.
Good idea to show the jellyfish at four different positions. Well composed arrangement.
Good story in the notes, and a nice idea to show the place in the workshop. That gives me a very good chance to get an idea of the Crimean coast.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hello Krzysztof,
Seen you after a long time, so please accept my belated New Year's greetings. I myself was exiled from TN for 2 weeks after Christmas; my net connection conked out.
I am looking at your jellyfish with curiosity. In fact, all marine life forms are a novelty for me. I am a mountain man and have practically no experience of sea.
I find the creature beautiful to look at, especially those inky, serrated edges. The pictures are very good, though it feels difficult to believe this flower like thing is a fish!
Thanks for dropping by and leaving your critique on my mountain picture.
Regards,
Ram

Hi Krzysztof.
You, probably, cannot imagine, how many times I saw and touched to these animals. As a inhabitant of sea coast I never had sympathies to jellyfishes. But your picture has turned my representations about them. Your artistic work is great. The reproduction of these animals are perfect especially of their colours and texture. The images of water, play of lights are amazing too. My best wishes and TFS.

Thanks a lot for your high estimation of my works.
Alexei.

Hi Krzysztof,
wow - this collage is amazing, I love those elegant Jellyfishes, to see them under water must be wonderful.
This one has pretty blue parts on the sides, a very good post, thanks
