[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In the note to one of my previous shots I had written that roses do not attract insects. The hoverfly (Rose to you or 100th post) and the wasp (The Red and… The Wasp (Stendhal)) are very seldom exceptions and so I decided to investigate this phenomenon.

First of all I remembered that I met the hoverfly on the rose in the morning. It was sleeping on the flower. For this reason I began to survey our roses every morning. Once I have seen this charming creature which had chosen this rose as a cosy lodging for the night. I do not know anything about this species and need help for it identification.

This shot is taken with my kit walk around Minolta 24-105 mm lens. It is not macro lens at all. I have bought this lens of the last. Therefore I try to use it a lot. Because this is not macro lens I have decided to share almost full frame image. The rose flower had been selected by insect not by me. My choice is the roses with insects on them.

In any case, I have first hypothesis: the insects use the rose petals as a lodging for night.

Hi my dear friend

This is a very nice and i should say succesful study that you took. It lead you to this very nice picture :)
I really like the quality of the work you managed here with this lens. I use my small lens now very often, too, and i'm beginning to like it more and more :)
The DOF you chose here is very nice and keeps the entire flower in perfect focus. With that, you implicitly got excellent sharpness on your little visitor here. The contrast created here between the green insect and the white rose is lovely and very well emphasized by the POV.
Not to forget: it's always difficult to proper expose white subject, but yoou did that perfectly here, my friend! My compliments!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Alexei,
This insect is a bit of a puzzle to me because of the flattened body, but the long antennae and legs suggest that it it is related to crickets (Tettigoniidae).
It may well be in the rose to look for other insects to prey on, but as you took this shot quite early in the morning I doubt if it will stay for the night, maybe it was there from the previous night and probably that is what you mean.
Excellent sharpness and exposure in this shot.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Alexei,

You have been a fine detective! It would be an interesting project to find if particular colours attract particular insects!

I like the highlights and shadows on the rose; they give the petals shape and depth! The insect looks as if it has slept just where it crawled into the plant; it is not curled up! Or, possibly., it has moved into the sunshine!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Alexei,
As a keen gardener I love roses but I only have one in our garden as Ivan doesn't like the thorns! I prefer roses with a fine scent, perhaps insects to the same! I certainly see quite a few on our rose.
This is very well exposed in beautiful light. I don't know what the little creature is but he looks good on the white petal.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Dear Alexei,
I believe that it can be an Italian Cricket (known also as tree cricket) Oecanthus pellucens (Gryllidae).
Picture has very nice composition and details. I have to say that for the first view (the mini version) I believed that this is "only a rose", the insect was invisible for me :)
By the way, this is a very nice result of your photographic hunting at 7 am!! :)
Best withes,
Radomir

Interesting experiment. Alas, it's too cold to repeat ot and catch insects now, almost all flowers are dry now.
Nice picture with very good color and sharp, framing is good too.

Hi Alexei,
roses do seem like a cosy bed for the night and I expect they are very safe due to the deep petals :)
A great capture of this small Italian Cricket.

HI Alex!
NIce shot, I think I didn't see that insect before, looks like hopper but it's very unusually shaped.

Privet Alexei,
A beautiful capture of this magnificent white rose!
I like so much your close approach and the light/shadows play caught on it.
So this insect has an exquisite taste in chose its lodge to spent he night.
My compliments and thanks to post it.
Best regards,
JM

Alexei,
If I could I'd give you 1000 points for this one.
This is a RARE RARE RARE, once in a lifetime image.
Radomir knows about insects. Great.
Please note that as of tonight I will not have the computer for 3/4 weeks. It is going in for a "patch" of sorts; and, if it continues to give me headaches they will give me a totally brand new one.
My VERY VERY best regards,
Mario.

Hello Alexei,

Another very nice shot from you! You managed one more time excellently with the exposition of the white! And the choice of aperture (F/16.0) was a great one in order to have the whole flower in focus and only it! I like very much also the title you named your picture reflecting very well what happening here ;-)

Also, excellent square composition choice!

Hello Alexei,
There are some wonderful details in this fine capture!
The white petals are well exposed, and the insect stands out well on this difficult background...
F/16 seems to be a good choice for this job, as insect and all of the flower come out sharp!

Hello Alexei
I can't imagine a better and more beautiful place for an insect to take lodging for the night. You made a good observation and an interesting study. I didn't know that insects don't feed on roses. I must praise the Oecanthus' decision on chosing this rose and I must praise your decision on chosing this little Oecanthus. Your new lens is a marvel and you did an excellent and astoundingly beautiful shot with it.
Congratulations and thank you very much for it.

Dear Alexei,
a cozy place to spend the night, indeed. Fabulous handling of light on those white rose petals. They look deliciously pure and three-dimensional. And your notes are very special again. I like your scientific way of observation, it always comes along with a distinctly poetic touch. Thank you my dear friend, and have a good evening.

Hi Alexei. I like this. The thumbnail did not make it obvious but the large version is a good close up both of the flower and the grass hopper. Good clarity. TFS. Murray.

This is a very fortunate capture. The focus is very good. As said by horia..yes it is sometimes hard to capture white without an overexposure. You did this exceptionally. I think roses attract many many insects...aphids for sure.
Good work Alexei

white flower is difficult to shoot, to balance the colours. here you did well. The best thing is the iclusion of the insect between outstanding white petals.
