I was very glad with opportunity to take series shots of the cute fly exactly in my garden sitting on the chair near the plant which was transplanted by my wife only this year. As it appeared, Bombylius likes this plant very much. I have never met the species in the garden before. Such comfortable shooting conditions, owing the flowers, allowed me to get few rather good shots of Bombylius.

That is why, as a token of gratitude, I have decided to post an image of three insects (this remark is for TN administrator :) which demonstrates mentioned above cultivated plant more clearly.

This is one species of Stachys (I do not know correct species ID. There are many species of Stachys genus).
____

Stachys is a genus of about 300 species of annual and perennial herbaceous plants and shrubs in the family Lamiaceae. The distribution of the genus covers Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia and North America. Common names include Heal-all, self-heal, woundwort, betony, lamb's ears, and hedgenettle .

(However, in our country this plants is often named as Hare's Eras or Lamb's Eears.)

The stems vary from 50-300 cm tall, with simple, opposite triangular leaves 1-14 cm long with serrated margins; in most species the leaves are softly hairy. The flowers are 1.2 cm long, clustered in the axils of the leaves on the upper part of the stem, the corolla 5-lobed with the top lobe forming a 'hood', varying from white to pink, purple, red or pale yellow.

Stachys species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the Coleophora case-bearers C. auricella (recorded on S. officinalis), C. lineolea and C. wockeella (feeds exclusively on S. officinalis).
____

More info about Stachys see Stachys.

Note: the height of pictured plant is about 50-60 cm.

Hello Alexei,
I like this one!
Great capture of a Bomylius coming in to 'attack' the flowers of the Hare's Ears in an excellent in-flight with a fine side POV that shows the position of the legs in flight very clearly and the other OOF bombylius in the BG gives us another view of the legs in flight.
Well captured and thanks for sharing this delight,
Regards, Ivan

Your story looks like dream of every nature photographer - just sit in own garden and take good photos :-) Very nice catch. This is probably one of most cute flies. Fluffy ball frozen in time. Good POV and interesting moment - we can see positions of insect's legs during flight. Nice work!

Hi Alex, kowing the quickly mouvement of the bombus i'm surprising for the great quality of details of this pic, very impressive and most difficult work, just my best compliments for this 1st class pic, have a nice day,Luciano

Hi Alexei,

What a wonderful way to get a great photo! The plant fascinates me - it really does look like a lamb's ear. The lavender provides a wonderful contrast to the picture. The in-flight Bombylius above the leaf is amazing. I love the position of his legs. Details and textures of the insect are marvelous. Excellent composition as always.

Jane

One coming in and one leaving and the one coming in looks as though he is running!! What a super in flight capture. Very well documented as you always do so well...I have a crab on my wall..spider that is:-)

Privet Alexei,
It's so incredible the way the legs of the insect are up when in flight.
Excellent the action, precise timing and proper focus.
The composition is also so good, with the inclusion of the "whites" leaves of the plant, and the addition of the subtle purple colour accent.
My compliments and thanks for the post.
Kind regards,
JM

Hello Alexei,
Well done!! These lovely little Bombylius are fascinating to watch as they hover between flowers. They really stand out here against the grey soft leaves of the Stachys. I love the way they leave their legs hanging about!
Great focus on both and lovely details and colours. Excellent work!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hi Alexei,
This is a busy flower! :) I like the movement in this picture, excellent details and those strange looking insects, especially this little worm that looks like a mini grass snake! I have never seen this flower before; it is very nice and unusual! Greetings,
Claudine

Hello My Friend,

I do like this! As I said before, it reminds me of a fluffy bug that the children at school used to treasure!
The pose is excellent with the legs akimbo, coming in to land on the plant.
The plant is razor sharp, as is the bug.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Well done, Alexei
There's an advertisement in the left panel: Ukraine Intl Airlines:-)
I quite like your plane.
Big Hare's ear as well.
Well done

Hi Alexei,

What an amaising photo! I like vrey much the hairy texture of both insects and plant. Fine way of using the shutter speed in order to freez the mouvement of the insects. The colors are rendered very well having a natural look.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Dear "friend", Alexei,
You always register strange species; have never, in my 72 years of existance, ever seen such a fly and or plant.
Just LOVELY!!!
Fond regards,
Mario.

Hi Alex!

Beside the instructive aspect your picture also is somehow humerous. It looks like a trickfilm I used to watch with my children called "Maya, the Bee". Here the fly baby seems to follow its mother back home...

Well, a bit much of personal interpretation, but that's also what makes photography interesting.

On the technical side, I admire the fact that you catched the flies while they were flying, but find the whole picture slightly over exposed and very vivid. But this does not change anything to the high quality of the posting and is personal.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Alexei

Now this is truly a very aptly named plant – Hare's ears or Lamb's ears (chuckle). I can't imagine that it could be named anything else. Thankfully, due to the rule that as long as there is an insect or some natural species on or nearby a cultivated plant we may actually show the cultivated plant in our photos. If it was not for this rule I would never have the pleasure of seeing this interesting plant. Very interesting indeed and thanks for showing it to us.

Of course the little visitor is just as cute and the one on the left you captured with excellent sharpness. The 1/1,000 second shutter speed managed to freeze the little fluff ball of an insect perfectly in mid flight.

Very well done MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Cool shot Alexei!
A big plus having the Hare's Ears and tiny bee fly in perfect focus.
And that geometrid makes it a +++ ;-}
Very well done,
Howard
