This year was so rich on crickets. Unlike last years, I have taken many shots of them. This one is last. Despite the autumn season, it is so warm in our places; some wild flowers are still blossoming and they continue to attract many insects.

These flowers are so tiny and not very cute. However, under macro lens they look very attractively as well as the grown specimen of the Green Bush Crocket.

Tettigoniidae

The family Tettigoniidae, known in American English as katydids and in British English as bush-crickets, contains more than 6,400 species. It is part of the suborder Ensifera and the only family in the superfamily Tettigonoidea. They are also known as long-horned grasshoppers, although they are more closely related to crickets than to grasshoppers.

Tettigoniids may be distinguished from grasshoppers by the length of their antennae, which may exceed their own body length, while grasshoppers' antennae are always relatively short.
The name "katydid" comes from the sound produced by species of the North American genus Pterophylla (literally "winged leaf"). The males of katydids have sound-producing organs (via stridulation) located on the hind angles of their front wings, which in some species produce a sound thought to resemble the words "Katy did, Katy didn't", hence the name. In some species females are also capable of stridulation.

There are about 255 species in North America, but the majority of species live in the tropical regions of the world.

The diet of tettigoniids includes leaves, flowers, bark, and seeds, but many species are exclusively predatory, feeding on other insects, snails or even small vertebrates such as snakes and lizards. Some are also considered pests by commercial crop growers and are sprayed to limit growth. Large katydids can inflict a painful bite or pinch if handled but seldom break the skin.

The spike headed katydid is somewhat notorious for its plantlike appearance, which allows it to blend in with the vegetation on which it lives, and the spikes discourage potential predators.

The males provide a nuptial gift for the females in the form of a spermatophore, a nutritious body produced with the males' ejaculate. The katydid is a leaf-like insect which camouflages on leaves. The eggs of katydids are oval shaped and laid in branches and are laid in lines.

Hello Alexei,
Beautiful image through its natural lighting and also 'cause of the photogenic elements involved, for instance the cricket
and the flowers.
I like the fact that the latter are also available in the nlurred background. This is certainly a plus composition-wise.
Thanks for sharing
Annick

Hello Alexei,
there are so many details on this picture. The cricket is nicely captured, all parts shown with
superb sharpness (f18!) in particular the mouthparts, the eyes and he legs. Colours and light are very
pleasant, although the light conditions appear 'not the easiest'.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Alex, my today neighbour, fantastic macro of lovely cricket, great details, perfect focus and superb sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Alexei,
I like your composition with the Bush Cricket in focus. Great focus on the eye and good natural colours. I like the natural background. Regards Siggi

Bravo on this one. You do not post often but when you do it is just right. I think you are a man of good science and skills. You remind me a bit of my father...it is how he would have shot an image..he wold be 94 if he had not passed 10 years ago from Cancer..a great nature photographer among others..He would have, as I, appreciated this one Alexei..

Hi Alexei

A very nice shot of this big bush-cricket!
They are really very different from anything else when it comes to shooting and from my experience, they require a different technique. I think you might agree with me that a flower as support doesn't always work for them. I've seen some great photos though with them perched on clubrush and that looked really superb.

Anyway, you shot here is very good, with an impressive DOF that allows the entire big insect to be in such good focus.
The colors are wonderfully rendered, the light is well controlled and the side POV is nice, as well.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Alexie,
You are the master in capturing the lighting so well. This is simply brilliant. We also have similar type of bush crickets here. But I have never captured so beautifully. Many thanks for sharing this.

hello Alex,
I see that you used 640 ISO for this Bush Cricket picture. Amazing to see the result. Perfect sharpness on the insect and nice background. I agree with you, the litttle flower-heads are very cute. The cricket itself is also a guest in my wild garden :-). However this year I saw a lot less of them than in the previous years (probably natural fluctuations).
Thanks for the pleasant picture and the interesting note

Great photo Alexei. Fine details in this excellent Macro. f/18. Beautiful.
Luis52.

This Bush Cricket is surely busy doing something on the tiny flowers rather than sitting idle, Alexei.
The macro image is so very sharp I can see the light reflecting off the tiny pupil of the insect's eye.
The flowers and the insect together make it a charming composition.

Hello Alexei,
A very fine macro of a bush cricket, taken from a fine side POV with your usual high standard of sharpness and DOF to clearly show us practically the whole insect against a fine OOF natural BG and set in a pleasing composition.
This is Sickle-bearing Bush Cricket (Phaneroptera falcata), which refers to the sickle-shaped ovipositor partially shown by this female.
Nice to view and thanks for sharing this fine image,

Hello Alexei,

This big grasshoppers are very nice looking insects. Due to thir big body it is not easy to show the whole insect sharp. You did it very well kepping in focus not only the insect but the flower beneath too. You have made good use of the light so the colors of your photo look very natural.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Alexei,

excellent, your picture of this female bush cricket. I see clearly now what you can do with simple sunlight when the equipment is right!.

By the way, the species is Phaneroptera falcata as Ivan pointed out.

My best wishes to you, Alexei,

What a shot, Alexei! You've used the natural light to perfection!

Hi Alexei!

The details of the shot are outstanding but to me the most interesting part are:
1. The look that comes straight into our eyes is marvellously captured and
2. The perfect light management that you had, some areas on the insect's body are as if over saturated but looking closely, one can still see the details and texture.

Great shot.

I enjoy the sunny look here.
Very good colors, DOF, and sharpness Alexei.
Excellent POV and diagonal comp, and it's artfully executed :)
Well done!
