[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
With help of this short series (original one and two workshops) I want to show: (i) skill of hunting demonstrated by this charming gull and (ii) blunders of photo hunting demonstrated by me (see also WS #1 and
WS #2).

I had taken many shots of gulls coming back by a car from one business trip. The road ran through Tiligulsky Liman on a dam. Near to road at the basis of a dam the old destroyed road ran. At these pictures the rests of the old bridge are imprinted. Under the bridge a narrow channel flow, connecting the basic part of liman and the shallow lower reaches, overflowed on the large area. There are a plenty of small fishes, which attracts many gulls.

I have especially taken with myself the camera on a trip, knowing, that I will have an opportunity of shooting flying gulls at close distance.

(i) Original shot is not first from this integral series but the most expressive. Each picture has been taken from intervals about 2 seconds. Next two shots (see workshops) demonstrate the process and perfect result of the gull hunting. I have titled this action as a perfection, skill of hunting.

(ii) My workshops are also demonstrate the level of my own skillfulness and my blunders as a photo hunter.

These are main reasons of so poor quality of the shots.
First of all, I primordially had set auto selection of focusing point mode for shooting flying gulls in the sky and I successfully took some such pictures. After that I forgot about this mode. On the third shot you can see that the gull is out of focus but bridge is sharpened excellently. This is a work of camera automatics.

On the second shot the gull is covered by a high dry grass. Initially I had not paid to it any attention. Moreover, the focal length (300 mm) had appeared too greater and the image of the gull did not go into a frame. It was necessary to change the focus length up to 210 mm (third shot) during the shooting. It is also not very good decision (for picture quality).

In spite of poor quality of the workshop shots, I should present proofs of gull skillfulness.

As to me I promise to improve the skill in due course -:).

This is a beautiful photo! I am curious about the specie of the gull... do you not that?

It is a technically near perfect photo, hats of for that. But I find this also very artistic and interesting because of the unusual composition.

Well done, Alexei!

Regards/Bengt

Hi Alexei

What a terrific scene and lovely set of photographs!
I really like your timing in all of them as well as the excellent skill you showed us here in managing all of them...because in fact they all have different lighting conditions.
The sharpness is impeccable and the natural colors are well saturated in all of them (maybe except the flying one, when the focus is better on the BG).
A very nice note to go with it all :)

Bravo, my friend and TFS

Dear Alexei,
skillful seagull meets skillful photographer.
Perfect capture of the right moment, crisp and clear, artistically well composed.
Thank you! My best regards,

Hello Alexei – my friend

This is a great series – the actual post and the 2 ws. They all show the natural behaviour of these funny birds – meaning funny to look at for quite some time because there are always something going on when they are around.

The main picture is a wonderful capture of this young - Larus canus I believe (Common Gull in English – Stormmåge in Danish). Excellent sharpness on the bird with very nice details in the plumage, Well blurred background and very natural colours. Great composition too. I really like the wide spread wings which adds some kind of action to the picture. Very clever handling of the light too.

WS 2 – very good timing. Yes, the gull is out of focus but the picture is still well captured in time. You could try to use Multiple Focus (if your camera offers this setting) for these shots and may be get a more accurate focus as the bird is within a range where the Multiple Focus will hit the target with at least one focus-point and the bird is closer than the bridge.

WS 1 – well you have already said it yourself. It would have been nice without the grass.

Yours
Mogens

Hello Alexei,
it must have very keen eyes to see the prey from above. Excellent shot, with a wonderful "ready set go" pose even the feet are placed like a divers.
Very sharp details and excellent POV.
I also like the rest of the sequence.. very interesting action going on.
TFS..Sky

Hello Alexei,
I always like your elaborated and interesting presentation. Those pictures in WS are indeed useful to see how a great "fisher bird” it is :)

Details, exposure and pose of the bird in the main picture are superb. You managed very well with those pale tones of colors and you did a great composition. This is a nice, complete and informative post. Thanks,
Claudine

Salut Alexei
Une très belle prise,l'exposition est parfaite et fait bien ressortir les belles couleurs de l'oiseau.Les détails dans le plumage noir sont parfaits.

Félicitations et merci pour l'envoie.

The gull is poised on its toes like a ballerina, Alexei :-).
The elegance of the wing posture also affirms my presumption.
What a marvellous capture!
The grey sky provides a fitting backdrop.

I like your photo from the dark blue sky to the great light on your subject. It's a great nature shot in a natural setting with the gull in hunting mode. Composition is good and focus is razor sharp. I enjoyed your story illustrated in workshops.

Hello Alexei,
In your case, 'skill of shooting' with a camera. Excellent sharp and well composed action shot of a gull. Beautiful lighting.
I think this species is a two-year old Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans).
Well done mf!

Hi Alexei,
Very clear and sharp, excellent DOF, color, and exposure. What makes this one great is the gulls pose..I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it. Perfect timing :)
Very well done.

Hello Alexei. Splendid shot with this faithful Sigma optics. I like the perch with wings wide open. The bright light allowed for high shutter speed which you capitalized well in making this image tact sharp. Nicely framed and well metered depth. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.
