This bird is dedicated to Gerhard Theron. Thanx a lot for helping me with ID.

Description:
Common name: Egyptian Vulture
Scientific name: Neophron percnopterus
Nickname: Pharaoh's chicken

Weight: 1600-2400 grammes
Tail: 220-260 millimetres
Span: 146-164 centimetres
Folded wing: 460-530 millimetres

The Egyptian Vulture is a small Old World vulture, about 60 cm (24 inches) long, white, with black flight feathers, a bare face and a cascading mane of feathers. The diamond-shaped tail is diagnostic.

The immature birds are plain brown and easily confused with a number of other birds. Carrion and scraps are their main food. In Africa to break open the large ostrich eggs, the vulture throws small rocks at the shell until it cracks.

Egyptian vultures lay one or two (rarely three) eggs and incubate them for seven or eight weeks. The young mature more slowly than other falconiform birds do.

Environment:
It's range is northern and eastern Africa, southern Europe and the Middle East to Afghanistan and India. Vultures inhabit many kinds of terrain, often roosting and nesting in groups on cliffs, in tall trees or on the ground.
Spain is the great sanctuary of vultures in Europe. They abound in many areas.

Problems:
The main problem is human activity: electric lines, dams, roads, uncontrolled tourism even poisoning and hunting.

Oh dear, another ugly chap. Looks like a banshee, so very weird. It's a great capture Sochirca. I think you handled it perfectly. I'm sorry that I can't help with the ID.

Very good heading:) You captured this with excellent detail and exposure. I like this portrait a lot.

Thanks for posting

This critter is very high on my wishlist. They frequent South Afica occasionally. It's an Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus)

The Egyptian Vulture is the smallest of all the European Vultures. Ironically, you called him fried egg because of his looks, but they are specialist egg eaters as well. :)

Thanx for the updated note.

Great , solid quality portrait ! Impossible to catch in the wild !

Hi Sochirca
A very nice mug shot of this Egiptian thief. I think the Baba Jaga must have looks something like this - she is the witch in Eastern Europeen folklore, but I have forgotten which country. Her house stood on chicken feet!

I really have to laugh about this :-). Your title is well imagined, and this ugly chap has really a face you can't forget! Very good shot, quite well exposed on a difficult subject like white feathers (my nightmare). Head is sharp an well textured. That's important here to grasp all details showing his strange personality. Really good, and a rare shot. Thanks.

Nice portrait of a rather weird bird. Right exposure provided good detail. Very clever title. Well done.
