This is a visitor to the flamingo pond at whipsnade. I think it's a black-headed gull.

Black-headed gull
Larus ridibundus
Not really a black-headed bird, more chocolate-brown -in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head. It is most definitely not a ‘seagull’ and is found commonly almost anywhere inland. Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting.

Where does it live?
Breeding
Coastal marshes, freshwater marshes, gravel pits, lakes and moorland pools.
Wintering
Coastal marshes, estuaries, inland wetlands, reservoirs, ploughed fields, pasture, playing fields and rubbish tips.
Where to see it
The commonest inland gull, particularly in N England, Scotland and Wales. Large colonies along the south and east coasts of England.
What does it eat?
Worms, insects, fish and carrion.
What does it sound like?
A harsh 'kree-aaa'
When to see it
All year round.

The lovely reflection of the warm red light really enhances the subject!
A well composed image with good balance, a very fine pose from the bird which is captured with excellent textures and sharp fine details in the feather coat!

Vey nice shot on this gull. Very nice colors and warm tones from the spot on exposure. Great quality soft light and nice reflections make this shot. I have never seen a Black-headed Gull with such light Brown plumage on the head. Some kind of cross breed???

Nice composition for this relax Gull, I like the reflection and the colors of water. The pink tones come from the Flamingos ?

Wonderful picture Alan. Very calm atmosphere with nice warm colours. The pov is very good as well as the dof. Plenty of details in the plumage and very nice reflection in the water. Perfect composition with the gull out of centre. - All over a very pleasant picture to look at.

Well done for spotting a great opportunity. Most people would have passed it by. I find that it's difficul for me to get any decent shots of the flamingoes. Probably need a longer lens!

Hi Alan,
Beautiful light in this, the golden colour across the water is just superb. I'm not sure what it is, Black-Headed Gulls have quite short and completely white tails, this one looks to have a long tail. Anyway, nicely framed, a great shot.
