[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
To tell the truth, I didn't know that male mallards have an eclipse phase to their plumage until now. I thought all the brown mallards I see were females and the males had permanently brilliant, iridescent, green/blue heads. Then I started editing this photo and noticed that the bill on this 'female' was yellow, not the usual orange/black. Thinking it might be something other than a mallard I pulled out my bird book and learned something new... Yes, male mallards have an eclipse phase in which they look very similar to the female but their bills stay yellow and their breast is redder than their lady friends. I can't believe it's taken me this long to notice... I feel a bit silly now.

I cropped this for better presentation, ran through unsharp mask to eliminate 'haze', tweaked the contrast slightly, did a light pass through 'digital noise removal', used the 'color fade' tool to lift the color a bit and then resized it for presentation here. What I like most about this photo is those 'electric' patterns in the water.

Hi Mish, this is facinating. I have been seeing these and thought they were a different species. My bird books are obviously not as comprehensive as yours as I keep looking them up to no avail. Very interesting indeed and well done on the info. The shot has lovely light and the tones in the feathers are very good. Nice and sharp and nice pov, great reflection in the water.
