Silver Washed Fritillary, Argynnis paphia
A week or so ago I posted an image of the underside of this species, and today here is the upperside. Both of male specimens.
This individual was feeding fleetingly on bramble (blackberry) blossom at the edge of a wide sunlit ride through the ancient mixed woodland in Maidenhead Thicket. To get the picture, I had to 'stake out' a particular clump of flowers and wait for the butterfly to visit. Chasing after him was a waste of time, as he would keep moving on before I could capture the image.
After about 10 minutes he came back to this flower long enough for me to get this picture. It was hand-held from about 1.5 metres. PeterZ is right about the head being a bit OOF. As the light was marginal, I had decided to use 1/250th as a minimum shutter speed and giving this priority led to a wide aperture and a less-than-perfect DOF. It is frustrating when one desite frustrates another!
The picture has first been trated with Neat Image for BG noise reduction, then cropped and resized in Photoshop. Lastly, there has been some selective sharpening after the resizing. |

Hello Alan,
The colours in this photo are very beautiful, good composition, the wings are very sharp, but the head of the butterfly is out of focus. Sorry, but I´ve seen better photos from you.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Alan. This is a good top POv so we can see the markings and bright colours of the open wings. Which you have taken with fine detail. It stands out from the OOF green BG. well done TFS.
Nick..
Beautiful colors and sharp focus. Also, an interesting composition. Congratulations and TFS!
