The Gatekeeper, Pyronia tithonus

These butterflies mostly flit about and occasionally settle low down in fairly long grass. This makes a clear shot of the underside with a plain background rather difficult to achieve. As in this image, the grass and leaves behind the butterfly cannot but distract somewhat from the insect.

Nevertheless, this picture shows the underside markings fairly clearly, with some of the scaling visible. Fill-in flash was used to add to the pale natural sunlight. The picture has been cropped, resized and sharpened using PS Elements.
