I arrived home today to find this wonderful looking caterpillar in our Garden.
Amazingly this brightly coloured tufty caterpillar becomes a dull brown moth.

***I've added another view of the caterpillar, showing the head more clearly***

The Vapourer (Orgyia antiqua)
(Linnaeus, 1758)
Wingspan 25-30 mm.

An unusual species in many ways, the males fly during the day.

The females are virtually wingless, an attribute normally associated with winter-emerging species, but the adults are out from July to September, sometimes October in the south.

The female lays her eggs on what remains of the pupal cocoon, which then overwinter. When hatched, the very hairy caterpillars feed on a range of deciduous trees and shrubs.

The species is fairly common, especially in suburban habitats, over much of Britain, but more so in the south.

Aunque el color del fondo no ayude,la nitidez del cuerpo del insecto su colorido y un correcto DOF son suficientes para conformar una bella imagen.
Saludos... Ricardo

Although the color of the bottom doesn't help, the clarity of the body of the insect, their coloring and a correct DOF are enough for to conform a beautiful image.
Greetings... Ricardo

Beautiful mf with warm bg, congrats

Hi Alan !
What a wonderful hairy caterpillar ! I have lots of caterpillars in the garden but this one I never saw. Awesome sharpness and details, wonderful colors, great composition and POV, and a b eautiful BG, quite unusual with this bright orange color - usually we see more green ! :-) Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Alan, what a beauty and in your own back garden too. The colours are stunning. I love the BG, it is very striking and beautifully diffuse. Just to be awkward (I know this is contrary of me), I would also like to see the caterpillar against a contrasting BG, maybe posted as a workshop to this image. The light is lovely and the details are wonderfully clear and sharp. It's a beautiful capture :)

A cute little fuzzy-wuzzy! Nice crisp detail in the shot. I just love the color in the bg. It's funny how the green stem stands out in from the bg, especially since green is so common everywhere else (including ohter caterpillar shot). A great shot with a colorful twist, Alan. Well done!

Hi Alan

Well done on a very nice shot. You show your subject very well. Love the BG colours. Crisp, clear and sharp. :-)

Amazing caterpillar, I guess the hairs are to make them less tasty for birds? Probably doesn't work! Great contrasting background!
