[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here is one of the last Common Darters I have seen this year. It's a male and with there being no sun out I tried to get detailed picture of it's head showing the arrangement of cells in the compound eyes.

The eyes of dragonflies are amongst the largest among insects. With the eyes surrounding the head dragongflies can see forwards, upwards, side to side and behind all at the same time. The image they see is an apposition image, a series of apposed points of different light intensity. Insects can often see into the near UV and dome can also detect polarised light.

It is also possible to see an occeli (a single lens eye) above the frons next to the compoind eye. Dragonflies along with many other insects have three of these eyes. They are not able to see images but detect changes in light intensity. The nerves of these simple eyes are attached directly to the flight muscles to enable corrections to be made to flight conditions.

This is dedicated to Gert and Jaap who have decided to leave TN, I will miss you both.

I hope you like it. I have posted a Neat Image version as a WS, it gets rid of the noise but loses some details also.

A very very excellent macro Paul. I think that the idea to dedicate this one in particular to Gert and Japp is appropriated. TFS

Paul
Great to try and lure gert and Jaap back! I miss them too, DO YOU GUYS HEAR IT!
This picture is a subtle hint to "sse; the light and come back, Pleae
Sorry Paul this is about the eyes, juat stunning

Paul. Like Gerts comment as this really is a "microphoto"! Your glass must've been almost kissing this Darters face here. So what do you do - whisper sweet nothings into their ear or what? How about sharing some of your techniques on stalking these things because so far they seem to have eyes in the back of their heads! Quite literally! ;-))

quel est ton secret Paul !
nous savons tous que ton apareil d'origine ne peut prendre une telle macro sans complement d'objectif ! c'est pas une microscope hein ....
vraiment epustouflant ce detail.
very good work.

Gold medal! Hey everybody this one is winning... who is going to buy a microscope to do it better? :DD
Thanks for sharing Paul, fantastic work.

WOW, this is incredible! the detail in this is superb and the sharpness excellent.

Thanks for posting

The eye detail you show here is brilliant paul , it show so clearly the detail in the differnt sort of eyes that make them such a formidable hunter , well done especially this late in the year worth waiting for.

Wonderful detail, so explicit with your note. It realy shows an elaborate system, with all details. Now, how do you do this? How do you hypnotyze darters? Ok for snakes with a flute :-), but here... Anyway, the result is stunning. I prefer the original version.

To think, I decoratd all the ceramics, stained glass windows, and jewelery I made, often with dragonflies, never realizing how weird and ugly they are up close!!!! I still love them! Fantastic photo!

Hey, Paul, this is indeed a macro. By using 1/30 I would get no sharpness at all. You did really great here. Excellent composition, nice pov and dof.

Stunnig.

Fantastic view of those compound eyes and hairy exterior. The detail in this macro shot is great.

Wonderful image, Paul. I have been gone for a month or more while my hard drive was shot. I lost all my images but fortunately $519 later, they were saved.

I've missed the drama with Gert and Jaap. I'll try to check up on the forums. Thanks for this detailed image!
