I saw the beautiful bright orange from quite a distance and I tried to approach the butterfly for a photograph but, a second Comma entered into the airspace and a battle began. These are highly territorial and I wathced the pair fight. Wings fluttering and colliding with each other up to heights of 40 ft, descending again to fight in and around the nettles. I wondered how they stay looking so good. My question was answered when the fighting pair were resting, I got a shot of each. I could now see just how battered and smashed up these chaps are. And if you think this one is bruised, you should have seen the other guy.

The ragged underside wings of the Comma resemble dead leaves, they also bear a small white mark in the shape of a comma. The adults can overwinter, hiding with pefect camouflage in hedges and undergrowth. Foodplants for the larvae are nettles, hops and elm.

Thank you for viewing, I hope you like it.

Paul, We seem to be doing butterflies all at the same time. Great shot again. I love the strong colours and the detail in this one.
Greetings, Jan

Quelle belle photo pour ce magnifique papillon ! Les couleurs sont très chaleureuses. Les formes de ses ailes sont originales.
Amusant trois papillons publiés au même instant sur TN ;-)
Well done !

bonjour Paul.
bien belle prise. le gamma (Robert the Devil in france) est souvent les ailes refermées.
il semble se chauffer les ailes au soleil
couleurs pétantes sur fond vert.
jolie photo d'un superbe papillon

Nice and sharp capture with very good DOF. You were lucky with his choice of perch allowing for an oof background. He doesn't look too bad, no major bits and pieces are missing. Did you manage to catch the other guy, too ;-))

Paul, Enjoyed reading your narrative. Kind of reminds me of my "nature quest" (HA!) yesterday. Found my self chasing a butterly around the yard, waiting for it to tire and rest for the shot. This photo has a nice contrasting light foreground/dark background that works well. Vivid color, great detail-great photo!

This is a great, but also sad shot. It is really sad that beauty such as this must fade as well. The shot has excellent DOF and color.

Bravo pour cette belle prise, le soleil en contre jour fait ressortir les détails du contour et donne de l'éclat aux couleurs.

What, do they have teeth? Look at the gaps chomped out of the wings! Nice capture here, Paul. Also what look like great backlighting on the wings too.

Excellent work,well done.

Very nice capture Paul. Nice colous and contrast. Great detail. Interesting note. Perfect DOF. With scars like these I insist on seeing the other guy... ;) Thanx.

Both very good shots the 1st one looks like its floating with the success;0)).
Its amazing how they just fold up their wings and vanish when they hit a hedge.

Well, it's another pro quality shot, Paul. Stunning detail on the butterfly, and good effect of the backlight (?) on the wings. Amazing colors. And boy, that guy in the WS sure looks bruised. Great shot.

Very great note, Paul, lovely butterfly, excellent of colours.
