[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On Wednesday at work, I had a lunchtime stroll through the woodland. I came across a small green woodpecker chick in a tree. I decided to make a special trip to my place of work this weekend to get some shots. Before we get to the chick, I'd like to introduce you to mum.

Green woodpecker
Picus viridis
The green woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain. It has a heavy-looking body, short tail and a strong, long bill. It is greeny-grey on its upperparts with a bright green rump and red on the top of its head. They have an undulating flight. They climb up tree trunks and branches and will move around to be on the side away from anyone watching.

Where does it live?
Breeding
Found mainly in broad-leaved (deciduous)woodland where it nests in mature trees in the bottom of a specially dug out hole on the trunk or a main branch. Will use mature conifers occasionally.
Wintering
Individuals seldom move far from their original nest site, although young birds may disperse in autumn and winter to feeding areas away from woods and trees.
Where to see it
Mainly a lowland species that breeds in open deciduous woodland, parks, orchards and farmland in England, Wales and Scotland, although absent from the far north and west and not in N Ireland. Not totally arboreal and will be seen feeding on heaths, downland and pasture.
What does it eat?
Insects, especially ants
What does it sound like?
Call is a ringing, laughing ‘peeu, peeu, peeu’
When to see it
All year round.

Two Trees And A Woodpecker

Two tall trees are growing in the woods.
A small tree begins to grow between them.
One tree says to the other, "Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"
The other says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands on the sapling.
One of the tall trees says, "Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"
The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, "It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. That, my friends, is the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in."

Excellent shot and well done on the composition and details. This reminds me of our Northern Flickers, which belong to the pecker family, they will perch on branches like any normal birds plus they will climb like peckers.
Does this one do the same.?

Anyhow, this is a great shot of this lovely woodpecker. The muted colors are gorgeous and the blurred background really accentuates the bird. Nice post, honey!

Alan, firstly, let me say a big well done on getting; a) within shooting range and b) getting the woodpecker to remain stationary whilst you got the picture! I've got close to these but never a picture.

It's a very nice shot but I wonder what white balance your camera was set at? The colours look a little flat and dirty...was it a dirty looking specimen? I've only ever seen them with a putrid green and the red on the head is fairly bright.

Hello Alan! Great shot, great notes! Had never seen this one before. It resembles what we call a "Flicker" woodpecker here in Ontario. Love the eye, actually the head looks almost like a heron's. Very nice composition, the green on the branch heightens the colour on the bird. As for your joke....LOL! Well done!

Nice shot. The POV gives a good view of the plumage, which is a lovely colour. She stands tall and alert, I would imagine aware of you presence and her babe close. Excellent shot. OOF BG is spot on. Love the joke.....
