[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This spider (Meta segmentata) is sometimes known as the lesser garden spider and is a common garden orb-weaver. Smaller than Araneus diadematus this spider is almost as variable in colour and pattern. In late summer and autumn the male of the species can be seen waiting patiently in a corner of the female's web, when the female catches an insect and begins wrapping it the male will quickly mate with the female. By mating at this time the male avoids being eaten by the female and will be able to mate again perhaps with a different female on another day.
The male has a smaller abdomen and longer legs than the female. This is probably because the male has to walk and climb around alot to find the female - if the male had the same proportions as the female he would not be able to do this very well.
Hope you like this close up of her eyes. I used a diffused flash for this shot. Use the following links to see a male and a mating pair.

Not much to say except many 'ochs' and 'wows' :-)

Great macro Paul.
The small drops in the web are great.
Very good composition , colours, details and note.
Very well done.

Very beautiful textures are shown in the abdomen of this one. The composition is very good and the focus right on the face provides a nice DOF with sharp detail. You take very good shots of spiders.

Great shot Paul, I love the eyes, the diffuse flash worked very well. Nice composition and up to your usual standard of detail. Good note also.

Paul, you had to do this... I love this shot, it's fabulous. The shiny body shows off very nicely. Stunning composition. Nothing not to like here. Superb work. Masterpiece!

This is really a very good shot. Brilliant

Paul, I like your POV with the eyes seen so well. Also like your comp. & the details are sharp as ever. Bravo!

Paul, Spiders are not my favorite topic but this one is caught very well and with great detail.
Greetings, Jan

Great colour detail and smoothness...I like the title, but don't they invite the boys to dinner afterwards?

great details here. One can even see that the pattern on its back is textured and not flat. I like it a lot.
