This another new species for me on TN!

It is a Forest Bug.

I hope you like it :)

The forest bug (Pentatoma rufipes) is a species of shield bug in the family Pentatomidae. It is a common and widespread species found in forests and woodlands worldwide. It is shiny dark brown with red-orange markings on its body and bright orange legs. It is shaped like an escutcheon-type shield, flat, and about 14 mm in length. Its distinguishing characteristic is a pair of plates extending forward from the shoulders at the front of its dorsal thorax.

The forest bug's main food source is any of several species of oak. It is a sap-feeder and uses piercing mouthparts to withdraw the liquid. It can also be found on other species of deciduous trees. The forest bug is also an agricultural and garden pest, as it will not hesitate to feed on fruit and nut trees. Occasionally it will consume other insects.

Adults lay eggs during the summer in the cracks of tree bark, and the larvae hatch the following spring.

Hello Joe,

Beautiful picture of this bug. Nice composition, good sharpness and great detail. Beautiful natural colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hallo Joey
What an fascinating bug. In my opinion it is shaped like a shield and it looks like it is carrying a haversack on its back. The orange dot in the centre could easily be the buckle to open and close it. Do I sound crazy? I always try to see something different in a photo than just the most obvious. I found this Forest Bug very interesting to look at and enjoyed the notes just as much. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

It is impressive how many of these Shield bugs there are. All of them seem somewhat different in colourings and perhaps size, but they have a rather distinct shape don't they? This is a crystal clear image in natural colours. It has an eye enhancing perch and backdrop but still fills enough of the frame to make it quite the examination insect. Very nicely done Joey.

Joey,
there ou go, right into the Hall of Fame for such a wonderful picture. Your picture goes a long way to explain how much more interesting insects are when we look at them closely. You did not explain your obviously perfect technique in detail: the light is so good, DOF ok despite f/3.2.
Best regards
