[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This one is dedicated to Rob (Arfer) for all his fantastic photos :-)

I thought I'd leave you all with a shot of a Ruddy Duck from a pond at Whipsnade Zoo. I'm off to the New Forest in a couple of hours for a photography weekend :-) I'm going to have a go a shooting Nuthatch, Great Tit, Coal Tit etc today (I know a place where these birds thrive!) and then tomorrow will be meeting up with Horia, Paul (Paulh), Paul (Lawbert), Nick (nglen), and I think Jai Glen (jai_glenny) too :-D

I hope you like this!!

Ruddy Duck - Oxyura jamaicensis

Family
Swans, ducks and geese (Anatidae)

Overview
Ruddy ducks are small, stout freshwater diving ducks with broad, short wings and narrow, stiff tails. The male ruddy duck has a bright chestnut body, black crown, white cheeks and blue bill. They swim buoyantly, often with the tail cocked up, and can also gradually submerge without diving. They hardly ever leave the water, being very ungainly on land. They were brought here from North America to enhance captive wildfowl collections. Subsequent escape and successful establishment outside of the UK has resulted in a European conservation problem due to them hybridising the white-headed duck.

Where to see them
The UK's ruddy ducks are concentrated in the West Midlands, northern England, Anglesey and southern Scotland.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Aquatic insect larvae and plant seeds

Thanks!

Hi Joe,
A lovely dedication for Rob. Beautiful blue beak. A very good capture with sharp details and a lovely portrait composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I like the confluence of four colours here, Joe. Each colour has its own beauty and all of them make a fine colour composition in this portrait shot.
Well done and TFS.

Precioso retrato Joe, y muy bien controlado el acercamiento. Es muy bonita pero es que la anterior que publicaste fue .... soberbia !! jeje.

Hi Joe

I got lost in a maze of oblivion and it took a while to return to this point (chuckle). So I'm happy to see the ducky again and what a beauty of a close-up it is. You made that 400D x 100-400 L IS combination work for its money worth and the result shown definitely did not disappoint you (or us).

A great portrait presented in a lovely composition and I fancy the relative close crop. The arrangement of the close proximity and the ample DOF ensured razor sharp details in the plumage and especially on the beak. The contrasts are quite fine with relative good features visible on the black and white feathers. Great exposure control resulted in excellent lighting on the subject.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Joey,
You are fast turning into a specialist in intimate portriats. Each one hat you do excels in its richness, details and focus and sharpness. This is a stunning protrait and you have picked up all the wonderful details. The blue and the white on its head i guess must have been a tad tricky for you to get the right exposure and the lights and you managed it like a thorough professional. The green BG looks so perfect for this one.I love this one so much...this goes right into my favourite shots.
Thank you dear Joe, its a pleasure to see your works.

Cheers
