[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The last two years have been poor breeding years for the Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) shown here. Consequently, we have not seen as many of these relatively comon butterflies as we would expect. Yesterday, however, I heard reports that there has been quite a large migration of this, and some other, Nymphalid species into the UK from the near Continent.

This is good news as the newly arrived butterflies will hibernate here and perhaps produce a good brood in the spring.

The individual in this picture was the only one I saw last Sunday at Bernwood, among the host of Commas that were there. Normally, I would expect to see many more Tortoiseshells than Commas, so this is indicative of the breeding problems mentioned above.

Let us hope that this recent immigration will hep with a larger number of butterflies for everyone to enjoy next year.

In response to a number of comments, I have placed a new version of the picture in a Workshop with more sharpening. Please let me know if you prefer this or think it is over the top.

Best wishes to all fellow Trekkers.

Hello Alan
Your note is very interesting and as a newbie to butterflies I have yet to find a small tortoiseshell and only 2 Commas this year.
Your picture is fine if a little unsharp..I have a 50mm macro lense that I generally leave in the bag and I now tend to use my Sigma 50-500 as it gives a greater working distance from the subject..There is then a need for a slight crop but I find this acceptable due to the sharper image that is captured initially.
Best Regards
Paul

Hi Alan
Unfortunately you have some sharpness problems here. I like OOF backgound, composition, field guide POV and colors but you could try to do a little unsharp mask on wings

Hello Alan,

Your photo has such beautifull colors reminding me the summer that has past. The excelent contrast with the background enhaces the colors of the butterfly helping viewer concentrate on it.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
