[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I finally got to try out my new camera today. After a late night out, the best way to recharge is a good early morning walk in the local woodland.
This is Whiteleaf Woods near to Princes Risborough. This little town is where I used to live, and only a 20 minute drive from where I live now.

Here are some notes about Whiteleaf wood

Whiteleaf Hill is well known for its butterfly and wildflower rich chalk down land, leafy woodlands and spectacular views. The site sits in a prominent position high above Monks Risborough on the Chilterns escarpment. The panoramic view from the top of Whiteleaf Hill extends over the old market town of Princes Risborough, across the neat patchwork of fields in the Vale of Aylesbury to the rolling Wessex Downs in the far distance.

Whiteleaf Hill is diverse in habitats and landscapes, from the flower rich chalk downland with scattered scrub, through recent secondary woodland to ancient semi-natural woodland and beech plantation.

Woodland habitats
The typical Chilterns woodland that stands between the car park and the Neolithic barrow is an example of Ancient Semi Natural Woodland, i.e. an area which has had continuous woodland cover since 1600.

The upper slopes contain remnants of beech high forest on clay soils planted in the 18th and 19th centuries as a monoculture for local industries, with oak and ash. On the lower north-west facing slopes ash and sycamore become commoner with whitebeam, yew and holly. Only limited remnants of the mature beech canopy can be seen on the site today as much of the woodland was damaged by the 1987 and 1990 storms and subsequently re-planted.
To the north of the Cross, on the north-west facing slope of the Hill is an area of recent secondary woodland and dense scrub. This is mainly resultant from the abandonment of the traditional practices which supported the chalk grassland which once covered much of the Hill's western slopes. Ash, whitebeam, beech, yew and holly dominate the secondary woodland, interspersed with shrubs including spindle, hawthorn and wayfaring tree.

A small number of open grown beech trees which grow alongside the Ridgeway, to the east of the Cross, reflect the "avenue" of similar trees which extends down into Cadsden Wood. These trees have now become over mature and as such provide a source of standing deadwood so valuable for insects

BEAUTIFUL scene and a new camera too! Congratulions Alan. I love the sunlight pouring down through the trees. Excellent composition, and I think the black frame goes well here. It makes the wood look darker and therefore the sunlit rays shine out even more. Good job, thank you.

I agree also that the black frame is a bit heavy. Maybe adding some white lines, like a mat, would help.

When I first saw this shot thought "this does not seem a photo from Alan". You should offer us more often artistic scenaries like this. Great misterious light and mood. The colour of the sky spoils it a bit for my personal taste, but I know how difficult is to handle that kind of Atlantic white sky. Here in Galicia 90% of my landscape shots have that sky... I hate it!
Congratulations for your new baby, I am sure you will enjoy it, and also we will through your shots.

Hi Alan
Found this post while looking for another post about the chilterns. Very nice post, especially the light coming through the trees. Exposure was tricky but looks pretty good. Coincidentally, you took this photo exactly a year ago!
I was up at Bradenham woods yesterday, which I'd heard about through a photography magazine. Have you been there? Should be good once the beech changes colour. I'll probably be going back within the next few weeks.
