[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
2nd image from Boot after the Waterfall this one was taken about 1/2mile up stream at the back of the remains of a second water mill, which is where my father spent a lot of time as a boy, it unlike the one down stream is in a state of disrepair. The tree is the remains of a Horse Chestnut or Conker Tree (Aesculus hippocastanum) it is lying in a damp corner of the back padock of the mill and what was not covered in with these fungi was covered in moss and ferns, not the usual tree type of tree it nornally grows on but the Ear fungus also called Jelly Ear or probabley politically incorrect Jews Ear but this is the name reflected in the latin name (Auricularia auricula-judae).
It is a fungus that prefers to grow on dead wood of elder berry trees (Sambucus nigra) but has been known to grow on other broadleaf speices as we see here,it does not seem to matter if the wood is still on the tree or on the ground. Found though out the year but more frequently over winter and into spring.If the weather is dry it will shrivel up but the moment it rains it will re-hydrate again.size wise it is upto 8cm across and is usually seen in clusters which can become multipull layers.
This is an edible species not that it tastes of any thing much. This and A. polytricha is used in east Asian / chinese cookery or so I read.
Taken Hand held but with my fingers steadying onto the trunk to try and reduce the camera shake.I also had to use the flash because the weather was so overcast making it seem like it was like late evening with very low light levels.

Are you sure no one is burried with their tongue sticking out? :) :) That's some detail in the fungus. Well done on this capture. Looks very Abtract. Your lighting is just right.

Robert, This is a great shot with all these shapes, contours, colors and patterns combining to create an almost surreal effect. It's one of those photos where the longer you look at it, the more it intriques!! Enjoyed the reading. Happy New Year!

After reading Mike's accurate note :-)), it's difficult to forget about a tongue! But this is simply beautiful, Rob. Light, details, perfect DOF, attractive framing makes this an excellent shot. Fore and background are ideal to enhance the subject. Growing ones in front is a plus, as well as the piece of wood texture. One of the best fungi illustration seen here. A favorite!

Great quality Rob! I like composition, colours, sharpness, details, DOF and note. Very interesting subject.

Very beautiful work Robert. Congratulations for this one, besides the good overall quality, you got a very artistic composition. A controlled flash level for 3.5 1/20, did you use automatic program, or manual mode? Thanks for sharing.

I will be in the UK in February (business unfortunately) and will be just south of London (Tonbridge, Kingshill and others)for a couple of days. Can you suggest any shooting venus that are really worthwile - landscapes, nature etc. I will have limited time, but want to do as much shooting as possible. Any help will be much appreciated.

Beautifully sharp and clean capture showing a wealth of details. Good POV, but I'm sure it is sharp enough for an even closer crop concentrating solely on "the ear" ;-))

I must admit that I know nothing about fungus. But I can recognize a good image. That one is a jewel. First time I looked at it, I saw a big frozen tongue lying on a bizarre wave of ice cream. You're making fungus interesting for me. Thanx a lot!

The mood and lighting in this picture is tops, just no nits there! It looks like a blob of jelly, for sure.
I like the "lizard" peeping out from below the scolloped centre jelly!
The wood texture rocks! If I had favourites, this would go there!

Very strange fungus you captured here Robert. To me it looks like a pigs ears;-). Very clean and amazingly sharp with wonderful colours. Great capture and note.
