Oooooops!!!! It looks like THIS is the Buzzard, not the one I posted originally, so have had to do a quick turn around. The one I thought was a Buzzard was, in fact, a Saker Falcon, so apologies all round.

Majestically soaring on the thermals above the Westcountry landscape, Buzzards (Buteo Buteo) are now a common sight.

They have a wingspan of 115-130 cm and are the largest bird of prey commonly seen in the south west of England.

Their varied diet consists of small mammals such as rabbits and earthworms. They also eat carrion.

They build large, bulky nests in mature trees from sticks. Grass and other materials such as wood are also used. 2 or 3 chicks are normally reared.

When they are not soaring, Buzzards are commonly seen sitting motionless on a telegraph pole or bare branch (see Workshop to illustrate what I mean)

Size 50-55 cm Female larger

Call Mewing

Colour Brown with lighter flecks in the plumage, but can be variable, particularly on the underside which can, from a distance, look almost cream/white.

Hi Vicky,

This is a nice portrait. Details are sharp and the exposure is good. The crop above the head is a little tight though and I don't really like the visible rasters of the cage. TFS!

Hurrah! I've seen a buzzard - a real one this time! Thanks Cathy. She's just as pretty too. The word Buzzard reminds me of those cowboy movies and books where they talk about the buzzards flying overhead. Nice colouring in her feathers too. Well done and thank you.

Hi Vicky what a beautiful bird, nice detail although there is a a problem with the colour which a corrected with a workshop. The main concern I have with this capture is that the composition is to tight other ways, a nice capture. 5/10 Regards Steve.
