Hello,

i thought i'd post something a little different today, partly because the weather's been so bad here recently that i have nothing new to share landscape-wise, and partly because i just fancied a change from the norm!
This little chap was a frequent visitor to the large Conker Tree that stands just outside my back door back in the Autumn, and i couldn't resist taken a few snaps of him.
It's not the best shot i know, as i think the composition is a little off (too much space at the top) and the DOF could be better, but i like this chubby chaps face and the studious eye contact, so i thought i'd share it.

From the Foresty Comission website, some Grey Squirel facts:

Grey squirrel: Sciurus carolinensis

Distribution: Native to North America. Introduced to Great Britain, Ireland and South Africa.

Habitat: Prefers mature deciduous woodland but also common in parks and gardens in towns and cities.

Description: Winter fur is dense and silvery grey with a brown tinge along the middle of the back. Summer fur is yellowish-brown. White underparts. Bushy, grey tail. Ears without tufts.

Size: Head and body about 25cm (10in); tail about 70cm (8in). Weight: 350-800g.

Life-span: Some live up to 10 years in the wild although most only manage 3-4 years.

Food: Hazelnuts, acorns, beech mast, tree bark, fungi, buds, leaves, shoots, flowers; will also raid birds' nests for eggs and young.

The grey squirrel was introduced to Great Britain in the mid-19th century from Nothern America and after many releases it began to increase dramatically at the beginning of the 20tyh century, mainly spreading from Woburn Park, Bedfordshire. It is now one of Britain's most well-known and frequently seen mammals, being much more common than the native red squirrel.

shot in RAW, a touch of curves, converted to JPEG, resized and sharpened.

Thanks for looking..

Hi Paul

A nice break can be good sometimes and and this a very nice picture to break your wonderful series of landscapes :)
Squirrels are terrific subjects for photographer - thier natural actions make lovely posed - just like the one you have here. This little chap seems very "passionate" about his food there and doesn't mind you photographing him at all. A very natural look of this cute animals, captured with great sharpness and in beautiful natural colors.
The composition is a bit unusual though...did you have to crop the image in any way?
That aside, i really like your DOF here, too, one that blurs the BG very nicely and makes the squirrel stand out well.
Nice work my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Paul,
I like squirrels, as you could see from my pictures, but your one is really different. It is too serious, and it has unfriendly face. Maybe it is really 'Alien Invader'? Who knows...

Hello Paul
This is a fine picture and its great to see you adding another feather to your cap as a wildlife photographer opposed to your usual seascapes (which are fantastic)...Yup the post isnt the best scene to capture this lovely squirrel on...BUT the pose is superb..and theres not much wrong at all with the DOF...I personally think its nice to present nature in what ever environment it may be in...Its all nature and maybe the site should stop looking for the sun rich pictures of exotic species and realise that nature is urbanised also and the work that the photographer has put in to capture special moments in natures great life..
Top Picture Paul and one which shows great stealth and camera skills to capture.
Superb note also
Paul

Wow, Paul!
This is a surprise!
Another lens, another subject, another set of criteria to consider. I like the pose and sharpness and the POV of this rather contented grey Squirrel if great. Here you had limited light and reduced DOF but you made the most of it. I just wonder if I would have composed it to have a little less space to the right of the tail and more on the on the left, with the risk of placing the squirrel more centrally, but that a small point. Otherwise this is a fine image and thanks for sharing it.

Hello Paul,
Well I guesss this little fellow is about as chubby as he ought to get, at least he will have a fine supply of fat for the winter...
He gives a very nice pose here, and the details in face and fur coat is great!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Great to see something different from you! (Not that I dislike your magnificent landscapes!)
I managed to get out today with my new camera and photographed a Squirrel for the first time in ages! Wasn't a great shot though seeing as my lens is too short :-(
Anyway!
This photo has a great warm tone to it and the colours are really nice and vibrent.
Very sharp with incredible detail in the fur.
A classic pose with the nut in its paws.
I really like the shallow DOF as well.
Well done Paul!
Cheers mate,
Joe

Preciosa composición Paul, donde destaca, aparte de la pose del animal, una gama excelente de colores.

Hi Paul,
Something's wrong with this picture..I don't see any water ;-}}
I like this "chubby chaps" face as well.
Terrible weather at the moment, so my Rocky's getting a break from the shutterbug.
PS - I'm now officially a convert from the land of CRT's..My first LCD widescreen monitor should arrive today. I'm looking forward to it :)
Well done,
Howard

Hallo Paul
Such a lovely scene of the squirrel photographed from the front. This is an excellent close up filled with a variety of features and details. I just love the big eyes, the long whiskers, the ears standing up straight, the massive claws and the most spectacular the thick tail. A unique photo, not something I am use to from your lens. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hello Paul,
Great capture of this Grey Squirrel although he's not as cute as our Red Squirrels! ice POV, excellent focus and sharp details. I like the colours too which go well with the background.

Hi Paul.
I am impressed by subject and cuteness of the pictured model. Captured composition shot looks like work of refined sculptor. Excellent POV and framing, nice pleasant to eyes colour palette and perfect sharpness of the animal and its pedestal. Bravo.
Alexei.
