Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus). This bird is very successful and widespread across pretty much the whole planet! This particular specimen is of the Eurasian subspecies G. c. chloropus. It can be found on the edges of almost any body of fresh water - in this case a small pond in the middle of Central Bournemouth. I found an excellent page full of information on Moorhens at wikipedia

I like this shot because the chick looks so lost and alone. In actual fact its family were fairly nearby - both the parents and even the juveniles from an earlier brood were helping to nourish it, support it to give it what it needed to get by in life. I guess in many ways this is not too different from us humans. Just like the chick, without the help and support of our families and friends we rarely achieve our true potential.

Sadly this will be my last post for a while. My normally ever-so-reliable MacPro has developed a fault - for some reason it no longer seems to be receiving the invaluable information from this site that it used to. I expect it will take about a month to fix.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

Hi Vinny,
I love this little guy. I have a weak spot for these funny looking moorhen chicks. You did a good job of capturing him with sharp details, good exposure, and a great expression. Well done and TFS.
