[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A male Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus). The UK's largest, and surely most spectacular beetle is becoming rare due to habitat loss. The larvae feed on rotting stumps and trunks - and with tidier gardens these are removed before they can mature (which can take up to seven years!).

My wife and I found this one after we heard it rustling in a large shrub in our garden. I carefully picked it up and placed it where I could take a few shots. The light was not great so the best shot I managed was using a ring light on my 100mm macro, which is ideal for closer work. The resulting shot has been lightly cropped and sharpened.

Kind Regards

Hello Vinny,
The shot is really excellent, despite the necessary use of the flash. The Stag Beetle was cooperative too! The colours, tones and texture are very well taken. A lucky day for you and your wife to meet this rare species in your garden. TFS and best regards,
Catherine
