Crab Spider

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Crab Spider (Misumena vatia) hidden underneath an Allium flower. I first found this small but powerful hunter when I spotted a small bumblebee on the flower. It was very still and when I looked the spider had grabbed and killed it as it was visiting the flower to gather pollen and nectar. Unfortunately the spider was hidden between the petals and not in a good position to gain a decent photo.
I kept an eye on the flower, and after almost two days of feasting on the bee the spider seemed to have disappeared. However, I spotted a small part of it sticking out at the base of the flowerhead. By lying down in the border I was able to take some shots from underneath (just! - the stem is only about 18"/45cm tall). My wife helped by holding a reflector to shine back up from ground level, as the subject was in the shadow of the flower. The shot has been sharpened.
Kind Regards
