Hello,

this is another shot from my recent visit to the further reaches of Dorsets' Jurrassic Coast, West Bay. This spot gets it's name from it's location at the western end of Chesil Beach, a 21 miles long stretch of shingle that protects Weymouth and the eastern part of the Jurrassic Coast from the swells of the English Channel. Chesil is actually Old English for shingle, hance it's name.
There are many fossils to be found wedged in these Sandstone cliffs and at around their base, particularly Belemnites, which are usually well preserved. Ammonites and giant Oysters remains can be found too, although these are typically less well preserved. Fossil hunting is tolerated around here but obviously, gratuitous collecting in large numbers is not and is actually against the law.

Shot in RAW, adjusted levels, converted to JPEG, resized and sharpened.

And yes, i did get VERY wet feet taking this :o)

Thanks for looking..

Hi Paul!

When I saw this picture, I knew I had seen it before. Your notes give me the reason for it. Comparing the two pictures, I prefer this one because of the low point of view and the closer focus. It underlines the wonderful blurr-effect of the water and the delicate shapes of it. One has the impression to come out of the water...

Oh, and I mustn't forget the wonderful sky! You know now why...

:-)

Thank you for sharing this pleasant picture with us.

Kind regards

Markus

It looks like scene from fantastic story - not our world, but some other planet.
Wonderful shot!

Hi Paul.
Beautifully done, the blur of the surf is perfect. Amazing colours with the white surf against the red/orange of the cliffs, sure worth getting wet feet for. Good use of the grad filter to keep the light on the surf and tone down the sky, though it does look slightly un-natural with the brick red colour on the top of the cliffs, but thats the impact of colour that makes the surf really stand out. Wonderful image

Kathleen

Hello Paul,
The lighting and composition of this West Bay shot are superb! I also like the water movement and the way the small FG wave has a diagonal movement in the composition. Well worth getting your feet wet!

Hi Paul, fantastic sea view with splendid light colors, great exposure, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Paul,

Stunning image. It's not just the timing of the shot and the shutter speed that makes this picture, although it's given a great composition, it's the level of detail and those wonderful colours. Stunning.

Kind regards,

Mike

Hello Paul,
A lovely seaside capture!
The colours are amazing and the dramatic sky adds mystery to the place...

Hi Paul and sorry for the delay

Yet another splendid coastal landscape from you, my friend!
I love this vertical composition here, emphasizing these impressive cliffs. The colors are charming and the contrast created between the rocks and the foamy waves is exceptional.
The rather long exposure had a lovely effect on the FG, elongating those curved lines that, due to that, now lead the view towards the rest of the frame.
The perspective from here is also terrific, with those cliffs going on and on all the way to the farthest visible distance of the horizon.
The only thing i feel "cold" about is the very upper part of the cliffs...i feel they are a bit too dark. I'm sure it's because of the filter (which you definitely had to use for the sky), but it's nothing a little dodging in Photoshop can't fix.
Anyway, wonderful work, pal!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Paul,
Another fantastic capture of this dramatic coastline. I like your low POV showing the soft frothy waves and the contrasting stark cliffs and the ominous clouds. Beautiful colours, fine DOF and great sharpness too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi mate,

Another corker! You keep on delivering lovely landscapes, very impressed! Great dramatic wide POV and nice amount of blur in the sea - worth the soggy toes!

If I'm going to be ultra-critical the only two things I'd say are 1) is the horizon slight askew (or is it just the ultra wide distorting it slightly? and 2) a nice border would really make it stand out!

Those tiny things aside, it's an excellent shot my friend, and I'm so jealous of you having such gorgeous coast so close to hand!!!!

TFS, Doug :-)

Again with the wonderful waves action. I love it. Wish I had known his trick while living on the coast. You rock cliffs are wonderfully colored and the depth of the field is grandeurs.
Bob

Hi Paul

Wonderful image with great light and a spot on exposure. Excellent framing and POV. It looks beautiful. I hope your feet didn't take long to dry off :)

TFS

Karan

p.s. enjoy Richmond, I was tempted to gatecrash your outing but I had better prep for my training course on Monday :(

Hi Paul,
breathtakingly dynamic sight into the primordial coastline of colourful Jurassic rocks washed by waters since millions of years. Perfect handling of long exposure. Marvellously subtle well saturated contrasting colours. An image of great aethetical qualities, making us feel the forces of nature working in eternity.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

Better wet feet than wet camera! This is another deep, deep composition with nice sharpness and interest all the way down the beach. Is the darkness on the upper part of the cliff the result of the placement of the ND grad? Great composition .

TFS
Evelynn : )

Wonderful POV, Paul!
Did you get your feet wet?
I can the settling of the surf and the shift of the sand! Great detail, composition and colours!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Paul

The low POV is wonderful in this shot.It makes the cliff look that much higher. The colours are rich and well saturated. The water motion and the clouds add a lovely action to this image.TFS

Rob

Hi Paul,
Love the extreem low POV here. I'm sure that it took some calculation and counting to get it all right. The brighter line in the foam is awesome, it draws the eye straight into the photo. Love how the warm colors of the beach in cliff contrast with the water and sky. And that is a really wonderful sky.
TFS,
Niek

G'day Paul.
Havn't been around much lately, sorry. Got the flu :( I've missed a few lovely shots of yours. This one is particularly great. The combination of the water movement and the beautiful light throughout the whle image is wonderful. I love those cliffs. Well done mate, have a good week.
Best regards, Steve.

Hi Paul. A very fine photograph. The POV along this tall cliff at near high tide is good to see as it would be good to walk along. TFS. Murray.
