[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was planning to go to Slimbridge today to photograph birds, I got up very early and looked at the weather report which said we would be in for a sunny day. At 5:30 am this morning I decided to go to Dorset (Miles, if you read this I was going to text you but I thought it would be a little rude at that early hour :-)). I have wanted to photograph this well known feature for some time. I arrived at around 7:30 am just in time to see the sunrise at the Man of War (just over the other side of Durdle Door). I then crossed over and took a few shots of Durdle Door. This is my favourite so far.

This one has cheered me up a little as I've had a bit of a disaster weekend (this is common for me and my friends have termed it "the Prince effect"). I think I have a speeding ticket from saturday and just after this was taken I moved to some rocks and slipped and fell. I have bruised my leg and twisted my ankle.
Don't suppose anyone would give me £500 for this picture?

The natural arch of Durdle Door has been cut by the sea through the almost vertical Purbeck Caps and the top of the Portland Freestone. From the landward side, as seen here, the Portland Stone is hardly visible and the surfaces which you see here are mainly those of the Purbeck stromatolitic limestones (the Soft Cap), like those of the Fossil Forest. Holes left by late Jurassic trees are visible. The soft Wealden strata, thin here partly because of strike faulting, have been eroded away on this side except for a narrow connecting peninsula protected to some extent by the wall of stone. Originally there was Kimmeridge Clay seaward of Durdle Door but these relatively soft strata have been easily removed by the sea.

Descriptive note from this site

I really hope you like it.

Paul, that picture is phantastic. From the thumbnail I was drawn into it at once. Amazing how you can see the movements of the waves on a still picture. The coloration is an extremely well balanced equilibrium of cool and warm hues. Details are crisp and clear, same as the weather. Congratulations! That result is definitely worth the all the troubles you've been in. Thank you for sharing it with us - fresh from the sea!
Best regards, Peter

Hi Paul!

£500 is very good price for this photo! Great place and rock formation. Excellent exposure - sky is good, sea too and we can also see details on rocks. Two seconds exposure made superb effects with water. Composition - fantastic. All is in right place - 'cold' colours od sea/sky, piece of beach with colorfull stones and BONUS - warm light at inner part of arch. Superb work Paul, really. Almost forgot - note is funny and interesting :-)

Paul, I'm sorry to hear about the mishaps, especially the equipment one which I reckon is the one hurts most. I hope it turns out to be ok.
On the up side you definitely got a winner with this one and you said you couldn't do landscape photography! I love it, the light, the long exposure and the framing. It is beautiful.
I can't manage £500 for the picture but I'm going to start trying to train local foxes into arriving after 5am...if it works out you're welcome to come and photograph it/them - especially as you have another flashgun! :)

Hi Paul,
What a fantastic shot, very beautiful!
Excellent colour and sharp image,
nicely framed and good presentation.

Exquisite.
For my modest opinion a wall hanger.
I like everything on it, Paul. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
Best regards, Felipe.

Hello Paul,
wow, this one is a winner. Wonderful landscape, nicely balanced. The warm sunlight in the inner part of the rock frame provides a clear main focus, the gaze wonders around but the wave motion you excellently captured draws the gaze immediately back via the diagonal lines to the main focus. Nice touch are the corresponding warm colours of sand and sunlit stone linked via the diagonals of the waves.
Great work!
Hope your week turns out better than your weekend. Good luck in any case!
Regards,
Gabi

No question it is a beautiful image. I like the effect of the longer exposure on the water, it creates a sense of motion agains the static rocks. Colors are great, details in the beach gravel are excellent. Great work.

Hi Paul.
This is a superb seascape shot! An excellent job with the exposure. Beautiful colors in this soft early morning light. The warmer light coming thru the arch is perfect. The long shutter speed has given a nice soft effect in the waves.
Flawless composition. You should be able to sell this one with no problem...
Scott

Well at least you got a fantastic photograph! It is just superb in every way. Now we have a new level of excellence to aspire to!

Hi Paul,
it's a great picture an it's worth £500 after your mishaps.
You have to slow down bit, if I don't remember wrong, you had a mishaps last year and almost drop you stuff into the water.
The compositions and POV ar great. The long SS makes the waves to be soft, it really nice. Lovely colours aand good details.
Great work, my friend

Beautiful shot. Composition and colours are great. I love the blur effect in the water. It looks amazing.

Well done and a well deserved smiley.

Hi Paul, the lighting here is great, especially seeing the sun shining on the side of the archway and reflecting into the Bay. Your exposure is great, the water lapping the beach hascome out well. Good job, and yes, definitely worth around NZ$1400...

But sorry about the damage to you, your bank account, your storage unit, and your pride! Not a good weekend I'm sad to hear!
Cheeeeeerrrrrss

Paul,

You are an artist of note.

Hi, Paul.
Beautiful landscape photo and place also. Nice slow water. Excellent composition, depth and colors. You accident proved again, that photography is not the worls's best profession to make money.

Bad luck on the water, but this is a really great shot, so hope that helps. Well done

Absoloutely brilliant Paul, the colours and lighting are awesome. I love the soft effect of the water and the lighting through the arch really gives the picture added effect. One of my favourites so far, if I win the big lottery I will give £500 for this picture but I wouldn't hold your breath, as my luck is as good as yours. TFS.
Dean.

Take the battery out and leave it to dry out in an airing cupboard for about 2 weeks, then try it again before throwing it away...

This is good Paul... but what a killer of a hike to get here and back!

Hi,
great landscape with great effect!
The colours, composition, details the sand are great!
Ana:)

Only now do I believe in the "Prince effect". I have seen it at work but in a limited extend.

To attain the balance for the fine, the slip and the storage you had to get a &%$#* great shot. This it is! Paul it is stunning. Print it and frame it.

Maybe some day someone will give you what you wish for it. You are still young... And already a pro. Unfortunately for you but fortunately for us, you pay the price to become so.
I really like it (the picture).
Thank you and take care, Paul. I do not wish that "the Prince effect" become a legend.

Amazing!
The whole picture looks exceptional, but there's so many bits here that make it looking that way.
I love the sky with the different hues of blue. Love the shadow on the rock and the golden light on the arch. Love the look of water that remainds me a thin ice. Love the reflection in it and the white waves creating lovely lines in FG. Love the part of beach in the corner. It makes the composition more than perfect because it match so well with the dark blue sky in the oposite corner. Love the light, the colours, mood,... everything.
It's a masterpiece Paul!

Wonderful photo, composition and technically wise! Thanks for sharing - Xplorator Radu

Wow Paul, you sure caught the moment here. Really love this place and the walk to the rocks are well worth it. Really one of the best photos to have on a wall. Cant afford the £500 for it but at least the though is there. I hope your ok after you fall and hope you did not incurr to much damage.

Top worK!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent shot! this one leaves you somewhat breathless Paul, you did your math on this one everything about it gets an A+. :)

Excellent work Paul. The two second exposure is perfect here, creating a soft, smooth surface, not only in the near, but the water as a whole..Excellent inclusion of the bit of beach pebbles FG, adding good interest, and balancing the composition. Very well done.

Breathless, may be the most appropiated word to describe a picture of that magnitude. Is incredible.

Hi Paul,

That sounded like some disaster weekend ... :( The picture however is brilliant! I am always on the look-out for opportunities to make photos with the long shuttertime-effect, but can't find them. I love the warm light in this photo and the exposure is perfect. Very well composed and excellent foucs. Well done & TFS!

hello Paul,
I'm catching up on the photos I've missed and where do I start?!!
This is excellent.
I like the use of the slow shutter speed and the golden light in the arch is superb.
A really well composed shot...a winner.

very nice picture, perfects colours !

Congratulations , clap clap ;) !

hi paul
j'aime beaucoup l'effet que produit la pose de 2 secondes sur l'ecume de leau.
bravo.
laurent

Wow Paul! This is a cracking shot. Great technique and excellent composition and light. Very nice indeed. Well done.

I'm glad I found this shot Paul,
Excellent image, lovely composition, detail and colours. I love the effect of long exposures on water.
The light catching the inside of the rock is fantastic.
I've just bought a Sigma 20-40 2.8 EX DG, and have the use of a set of lee filters to suit the lens. Do you think it'll be suitable for shots like this?
Thanks for posting, have a more fortunate weekend, and remember to stick to the speed limit near cameras (or carry a hacksaw with you!!!)
