Hello,

this is the entrance to Poole Harbour, where i took a walk this evening before the sun went down. I came across this spot, where the rocks in the foreground were lit by a nearby house's security light. It not often i come across somewhere the scene is already lit for me, so i thought i'd take advantage of it.

some facts about this beautiful place from the Poole Harbour Study Groups website..

Geography:

Poole Harbour is in east Dorset, south of the town of Poole. Its northern side is largely covered with housing but its western and southern reaches remain a natural complex of mudflats, saltmarshes, inlets and reedbeds rising to the heaths and grasslands of the Purbecks. Four rivers, the Frome, the Piddle, the Corfe and the Sherford drain into Poole Harbour from the west draining to the sea through the constricting headlands of North and South Haven (Sandbanks and Studland) in the east. There are five larger islands that provide valuable sanctuaries for some species, especially the red squirrel, which thrives on three of them.

Habitats and Wildlife:

The Harbour occupies about 3,600 hectares and supports an important wildlife. The open water, mudflats, marshes and reedbeds and the important Brownsea Island Lagoon provide valuable habitats for birds. Common and Sandwich terns, shelduck and little egrets breed here and in the winter thousands of ducks, grebes, divers and waders, including black and bar tailed godwits, can be found (the Harbour now supports one of the largest wintering colonies of avocets -1400 in 2002). Reedbeds have bearded tits and scarce wainscot moths and many plants form unusual vegetation communities around the shore. Underwater eelgrasses provide food for wintering brent geese, important estuarine creatures and fish populations flourish in the unpolluted waters, and the spread and decline of the spartina beds have been the subject of much research.

Well

Where to start ? Maybe the mysterious lighting or maybe the fact that I have never seen this stretch of water so calm. Whichever it may be it is another shot that draws you in with soft emotions then drags you to a fore ground of enchantment. Mr Haynes at full mast.

Hello Paul what a great portfolio you got some amazing works. Nice slow shutter to blur all the water completely to draw attention to the sharp colourfull contrast in the rocks. Lovely colour gradation mixed blue and green. I like the composition good amount of sky proportion. TFS rgds Necip

Hi Paul, stunning, perfect, just nothing else to say!! best regards h

An interesting scene Paul, I'm sure deciding the right aperture for a 30 sec. exposure was not easy, but you've done it again in another fine wide-angle capture my friend, a slight wave movement blurred the water in the FG, no doubt, but then maybe the water was polluted, eh?
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Paul,

This is a beautifully tranquil shot. The slow shutter speed has given an eerie quality to the water with the rocks in the foreground given real structure. Great shot with wonderful colours and light.

Kind regards,

Mike

Hi Paul.
Lovely long exposure photo. I love the effect on the sea and the perfect sharpness. Nice colours and composition.

You are with Seascapes somewhat similar as Mario of Quebec is with his birds...The difference though is obvious...as birds tend to look much alike after a bit...although Mario does well in posing them...rocks and water with land-side...that is an entirely different story. You have so many geo-facets to keep in mind yet somehow get the focal point to where it meets the onlookers eyes as pleasing....which of course you do...which is why I am here saying this!:-)

Hi Paul,
This image has a spooky feel yo it with the greens and deep blues. Thanks for sharing this unusual but splendid image Paul.

Hi Paul,
A very nice and serene shot. very nice colors and the lighting from the house is giving the rocks a very different color than what they would have had from a natural source and thus the interesting color combination in the photo. Great details. A regular person would simply miss the beauty of the place.

Wow! Another superb landscape from you.
30 secs has completely blurred the giving it a wonderful effect.
Very good composition and POV.
Magnificent colours too.
Great note.
Very well done Paul!

Cheers,
Joe

Hi Paul!

The color gradiation in parallel in the water and sky looks very fine together! It is a reflection of not a common type, only the tones are reflected because of the very long expo, the cloud shapes are not. Fg rocks have special colors that make them look so fine, so the lighting you said was really an advantage. Composed very well as always, TFS!

Best regards,
Andor

Hi Paul,
All I have to say is this is simply magnificent. Excellent capture of lights and well presented. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Paul,
I love the misty light, and everything, I guess!
Simply love it!
Cheers!

Hi Paul,

Wow - my friend, another stunning shot!! I would never had guessed the rocks were lit artificially, luckily that really adds something special to the shot!! The main question I have is ... how on earth did you get a 30 second exposure!? F18 yes, polariser yes, did you use an ND filter too? It has had a magical effect on the water, that's for sure - ghostly but lovely. The colours are spectacular - good use of the polariser! Composition top notch as always from you :-)

Cheers, Doug

Beautiful colors.

Hi Paul!

One day, when I will need a change from my mountains, my ice formations and my abstracts, I will try some pictures of that kind with long exposure times. The result is soft, appeasing and pleasant, with an artistic aspect that gives the picture a special touch.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Paul, fascinating sea composition with splendid exposure, wonderful transparency of water, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Paul,
Magical image with such soft effect on the water. Very skilful use of slow shutter speed and wonderful lighting brings in fantastic illumination. The FG rocks give a fine perspective to the image. Excellent DOF and a well chosen POV to portray this charming scene. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

bonjour paul
j'aime beaucoup les degradé de couleurs et aussi la profondeur de l'image.
superbe vue.

Hello Paul,
The subtle light creates some amazing colours, nothing dramatic but very attractive to look at!
The composition is well executed, where the strong foreground interest creates depth...
Fine definition and sharp details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Paul,

Perhaps it is because it's the harbour, but the sea is amazingly tranquil! Your low pov makes it appear incredibly vast but with perfect composition!
It does have a very haunting mood!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Good photo paul!

Hello Paul,
Another good 'wide angle' compo and you applied the 'natural:-)' light very well.
Well done

Hi Paul.
Fantastic image. 30 sec of exposure time is amazing. Blurriness of the water surface is superb and very impressive. POV and composition are excellent too as well as the fine and rare lights and colour palette. Bravo.
