I took a trip down to my local river yesterday to find my usual spot was under water, the path was flooded after the recent rain we have had. So i walked through the meadows down stream. But i still managed to get my feet soaking wet. I saw this pair of Weevils on a nettle.

( Phyllobius pomaceus ) Length 9mm.
This is a small Weevil. The body is black but is covered by greenish scales which are easily rubbed off.
It is usually found on leaves of common Nettle but also on other wayside plants.
They are widespread and fairly common.
Seen mainly from April-June.

I was looking closely at the insects and had not noticed it was nettle. I wonder at its age...In the wilds we had several folks who made a yearly trip from British Columbia to Aeneas Creek, which was buried in the deep woods near the top...but it held much nettle and early on folks would pick it for medicinal usage....A good natural perch with a story of its own. Fine lesson today Nick! You can go to Click here for Aeneas Creek... pictures a young friend took of our bottom 1 mile of road which was taken out 10 years ago around this time...it was called the flood of the century...It is of the first part of the wilderness road where it just starts up from the main highway into the wilds...

Hi Nick,

I think this is the first time we are neighbors. How nice! My lesson for the day on Weevils. I've not seen one before. Excellent shop with the sharpest of details. He has pretty colors and the pattern are wonderful.

Jane

Hello Nick
You really are getting into the undergrowth and seeking out fascinating new subjects.
Superbly sharp details here achieved no doubt by the excellent choice of f20..I shall never flick a weevil away again without a closer look!!
Excellent work Mr Bellamy!!
A good week to you
Paul

Hello Nick,
Fine macro of a pair of green weevils in cop..
You have really made good use of the high aperture to get a good DOV from this POV, the sharpness and details being great. Nice composition and OOF BG too.
These devils attacked our newly planted red hazel last year and they made the leaves look like lacework.
TFS this fine image of what I consider a pair of attractive pests,
Ivan

Hi Nicholas,

Very good close-up with the beetles. Very well addapted DOF to the subject rendering a very clear image of insects as well as plant. Very inspired way of using the lightg. Lighted and shadowed areas giving a nice efect of deepness.

Congratulations,
Cristian

I'm amazed at the amount of detail you captured without a macro lens. This is really amazing - how easy it would be to pass by without noticing these two. The DOF helps bring him out, but me, I would've missed him. I like the composition - and green on green, well, predators would have to look hard to find them, yes?

You outdid yourself with the composition because I know I couldn't have pulled this off. Nicely done!

Hola Nicholas:
Saludos
Jacobo

Hello Nicholas,

Very good picture of this couple weevils. Very good sharpness and composition. Excellent DOF. Splendid colours. They are very numerous here, like most of the other beetles this year.

Waaw Nico, another fantastic macro!!!Fantastic pic of this terribles bugs ,not easy to take so perfectly because always full of refections, very fantastic sharpenss,my best best compliments,Luciano

Initially, I thought it was a single Weevil with its tummy up, Nick. On close examination, especially after reading your note, I realized there were two of them.
Very sharp image that shows the details and colours on the subject with great clarity.
Thanks for sharing it and best regards.

Hello Nick,
I know these fellows very well, they nearly ruined one of our shrubs in the garden last year! They are very beautiful though in their metallic bright green colours that you show a fine close-up of here. Great details of this pair and well composed too.
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hello Nick
would this be a combat? or rather a flirt?
The photograph is very beautiful,
but their carapace seems quite rigid…
Amitiés, and Thank you
Laurent

Hallo Nicholas
This is indeed a super sharp and beautifully captured image. The details are clear and well displayed, and I specifically refer to the soft coloured and striped texture of the weevils bodies. The clarity of the eyes and the stripes on the antennas is really something special. The hair on the flower has a beauty of its own and is really eye-catching. A great close-up with a fine arrangement of soft colours, which is a definite feast for the eye. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.

Hi Nicholas,
I want to compliment you on this Phyllobius idylle. The beetles are among the most beautiful insects you can study under the microscope. Photography has been difficult for me: I had either too much or not enough reflections on the green scales. But you have hit it right with the light and with the sharpness of the scales. On my screen the scales are a little overexposed but I'm sure this looks different on another screens and / or size of the picture. Well done!
My best regards
Dietrich

High Nicholas,
powerful, very well detailed close-up of these two weevils in a splendidly lush green setting. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter
