Wall Lizards (Podarcis muralis). This species is not native to the UK, but there are now around 20 colonies established in the country, mainly in the south of England. They were probably released as unwanted pets or escaped captivity. They are very agile and as their name suggests, can scale walls with ease. It is a fairly common species throughout much of Europe, and there are at least 10 recognised subspecies.

I shot this pair in Spring 2008 on a wall bordering a path leading to the beach at Southbourne, east of Bournemouth. The top lizard is male, the lower one female. Both sexes have brown and green phases. They are not as scared of people as the native Sand Lizards - as long as you don't move too fast or approach too close you can watch these pretty reptiles sunbathe and clamber around the walls. At the same site in October 2007 I saw baby lizards that were only about 5cm long!

Here is a link to a good site I have found with more detailed information on this species.

Kind Regards

Hi Vinny.I have never seen them in this area mind you i have never looked. From your good well detailed picture we can see the male is a lot bigger. They have nice markings and a sandy colour . the tail of the female is slightly out of focus may be a f8 - f10 would have helped . any way still a great picture i will have to go down to southbourne one eve and see what i can find. Well done TFS.
