Branta canadensis, the Canada goose, so handsome a bird it was imported as an ornamental bird from it's native North America approx 250 years ago.

A number escaped from various Victorian collectors and became established as a wild resident in lakes and meres of the Shires of Cheshire, Shropshire Norfolk and the Thames Valley. By 1953, there were about 2500 to 3600 Canada Geese in Britain. The population has dramatically increased since then.

Canada's are a social lot, forming large breeding flocks up to 300 strong. Whole colonies have been known to nest together....usually near pastures so they can find adequate grazing. Some gees in winter will migrate to the coasts feeding on salt marsh and estuary. Fast and heavy fliers, usually in a V formation and usually very direct fliers, they don't tend to "wander" in flight, they know where to go and just "go".

They can be a messy bird in parks and can also be aggressive...known to "mingle" with Greylags.

Image taken at ISO 200, Shutter 1/80, f/5.6. Cokin polariser used. Photographed in RAW and all PP done using ACR plug-in to Photoshop 6. Slight sharpen only.

Hello Howard,

A lovely, wonderful capture friend! TFS.
Cheers,
Bayram

Hi Howard,

An interesting perspective on this Canada Goose, with some lovely detail around the eye. It looks like the polarisng filter has taken some of the light, which has restricted your depth of field. Next time you're out it might be worth trying two similar shots; one with the filder and one withour and seeing what impact it has. Great composition by the way, and the backdrop is stunning.

Mike

Hello Howard,
Well focused at the head/eye with nice details there. Good exposure, colors, and I like the blue of your BG too..
Great catchlight :)
