Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary

Description
The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary is very similar to the Pearl-bordered Frittilary, but is more widespread. It occurs on damp grassy habitats, woodland clearings and moorland, although still difficult to find and is absent from central and eastern England.
The adult butterflies fly close to the ground and regularly stop to feed on Bramble and thistles.
The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary is a Priority Species for conservation due to the continued loss of habitat and the resulting drop in population.
Adult wingspan 35-44mm

Habitat
In southern Britain the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary occurs in woodland glades and clearings, while in western and northern parts of Britain it can be found in damp grassland and moorland.
In Scotland it is found in a wider range of habitats including edges of woodland, woodland pastures, and damp grassland where patches of scrub and bracken occur.
In all habitats, the key ingredient is an abundant supply of the larval foodplant growing in damp, lush grass.
Larval Foodplants
The primary larval foodplants of the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary are Common Dog violet(Viola riviniana) and Marsh Violet (Viola palustris)
I took this picture with my Dimage 7i in Raw. I used photoshop to increase contrast and saturation slightly, and to resize and sharpen slightly. I cropped a tiny bit, but could not get away with much.

This is a superb capture of a Butterfly I have seen Flutter By but never got close to a capture let alone as good as this..They are one of the hardest subjects in my book and you have done a superb job here...Brilliant notes as well.

Hi Lee. A nice shot of the Butterfly. You have a good POV from over the top. good detail and natural colours. A may have cropped it a bit to make it look bigger. but still a good picture. well done TFS. good notes too.

Now are these tiny butterflies not really a delight to look at. Elegant and small, yet very noticeable, and this one is very bright and colourful as well. The greenery in which you have captured this beauty really highlights the patterns and markings on this tiny butterfly's wings. I like the orange dots on the edges of the antennas. A warm sight on this slightly cold day in South Africa. Thanks for sharing.
