An Amur Leopard cub born at Marwell in September has been named, following a competition run by Wave 105 FM.

The winning name - Milena - means “gracious” in Russian and is a perfect name for this beautiful and rare animal. The parents of Milena are Ascha and Akin.

Amur leopards are on the verge of extinction in the wild, with as few as thirty of these beautiful big cats left in their natural habitats in eastern Russia and north-east China. Their habitat was recently threatened by a plan to build an oil pipeline right through their territory. The disturbance caused by this work would certainly have sealed the fate of the species.

Happily, following strenuous lobbying by conservation bodies from many countries including Britain, a decision has been made not to locate the pipeline terminal at Perevoznaya on the Amur Bay near Vladivostok. A location has been chosen further north which will cause less damage to the environment and its wildlife.

Information taken from the Marwell Zoo website.

Wow, great stuff. Superb detail on the face, excellent pov and dov. The tree in the fg looks a bit blurry, but it isn't distracting.
Thanks for posting.

mark you are a stinker...pulling our heartstrings like that...:D
this is a phenomenal shot with the innocence of all young animals..its very sharp and the old tree trunk there is the perfect place to show the textures of the fur
fill flash..?
or good back lighting from you...you got the eyes in correct highlightin..not too central...ever notice models with the ring flash right in the middle...doesnt look natural
cheers

LOL... superb expression... she is such a little character and so full of mischief. I was watching them feed the leopards the other day, both mum and dad get locked up before the keepers enter, but Milena is (at the moment) allowed to stay out. First rattle on the gate and she vanishes into her rockpile ... only coming out when the keepers have gone. Bet it's not too long before they stop leaving her out when they go in the cage...

Hi Mark,
You've definitely got some great shots. This is a superb portrait, detail is spot on, DOF is perfect to get everything except the BG in focus, no drop-off on Milena at all. Superb shot.

BTW I looked up Milena in a Russian dictionary and it doesn't seem to exist. There are various words for grace or gracious, nothing like Milena though. The nearest I could see was Milenky which means pretty or sweet, I think that fits.

Privet Mark.
Has looked at this photo and has recollected a school rhyme: do not approach to me close - I the tiger, instead of a cat.
Have very well caught emotions of a small predator!

Absolutely adorable, who could turn down a face like that, I think baby animals have the greatest appeal when it comes to photography and you captured it beautifully. :)

Hi Mark

Now, the cute scale if way too high on this one... What a loveable face, with eyes to die for! Top shot! Thanks :-)
