I believe this is a field digger wasp. They normally dig a hole in sandy soil to lay their eggs, than they plug it up with mud and the new born leave the following spring.
This wasp however chose to lay her eggs in plastic rawlplugs in the wall of my garden. There are other holes without plugs and I would have thought more likely to represent a hole in sandy soil, but she used only the ones with plastic rawlplugs in them.
You can see the mud in her jaws to plug the hole. |

Hello John,
an excellent close-up of the wasp with nice colours. The focus plane appears just a little in front of the body (see details of the wall surface and sharp details of hindwing tarsus and tip of right antenna).
