I've had to raid the Archives again, as I haven't managed to get out very often with the camera over the last couple of weeks.
Seeing some of Emmas (Aramok) recent poppy posts reminded me of this shot from last June.

The Corn Poppy or Red Poppy is the wild poppy of agricultural cultivation—Papaver rhoeas. It is a variable annual plant, usually with vivid red flowers, surrounding a black center. In the northern hemisphere it generally flowers in June. It has a variety of common names.

It is known to have been associated with agriculture in the Old World since early times. It has most of the characteristics of a successful weed of agriculture. These include an annual lifecycle that fits into that of most cereals, a tolerance of simple weed control methods, the ability to flower and seed itself before the crop is harvested. Like many such weeds, it also shows the tendency to become a crop in its own right; its seed is a moderately useful commodity.

Its origin is not known for certain. As with many such plants, the area of origin is often ascribed by Americans to Europe, and by northern Europeans to southern Europe. The European Garden Flora suggests that it is ‘Eurasia and North Africa’; in other words, the lands where agriculture has been practised since the earliest times.

The leaves are mildly poisonous to grazing animals. The seed is harmless and is used sometimes as a condiment. The commonly grown decorative Shirley Poppy is derived from forms of this plant. The commonly used parts of the corn poppy are the seeds (in baking), the fresh green parts as vegetable, and the red petals by making syrups and alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks. Red poppy syrup is a traditional beverage of Mediterranean countries.
It has had an old symbolism and association with agricultural fertility.

It has become associated with wartime remembrance in the 20th century, especially during Remembrance Day in English-speaking countries. As poppies bloomed in much of the western front in World War I, poppies are a symbol of military veterans, especially of that war.

I like poppies a lot, and this one is capture beautyfully. Looks like its gently dancing in the breeze. Very nice composition, and framing. Sharpness colors and exposure are very nice.

You and picture of flower :-) ? I see, now you're in melancholic mood, after England's games ;-) But seriously - very good try. Flower is perfectly detailed, sharp and clear. Good colours and light, composition and frame also very nice.

great picture, lovely and sharp and totally in focus - something mine are not always, I work too close to the limit sometimes with my 300mmm.

colours and BG are excellent. I love the composition - might try something similar if you don't mind...

the field has been looking really good after a few days rain! maybe I can get out tomorrow morning...

Very interesting one, Alan. I really like the DoF you have achieved here -- just enough for all of the poppy and yet blur the bg.

Having just been trying to shoot some poppies in my backyard, it looks like you shot this on a windy day with those soft (wimpy) little petals blowing this way and that. If yours are like mine just getting the darn thing in the field of vision and clear is a major accomplishment, something I failed to achieve.

Remembering Emma's (Aramok) wonderful backlit poppies, I'm not completely sold on the flash fill here. But maybe that's just on the top of my mind because today while trying to shoot the flowers in my garden I ended up choosing all the shots done with natural light. Then I decided I need to learn how to dial down my flash. (I've seen it in the menu, but haven't tried it out yet. If I wasn't at work I'd be playing with it now!)

Lovely shot!
We have a war song about red poppies. They simbolize dead soldiers blood.
The petals on the one from your picture look great, there's a nice gleam on them. The details and DOF are perfect, I like POV too. As for the framing, it works, but maybe I would cut a little from right.
Overall, very well done on this one!

As Greg says, you posting a flower must mean you are in mourning over England's exit in the football! Abd a red poppy too! Interesting to see it aging like this, Nioce one Alan!

Hi Alan ! These poppies are always so beautiful ! Excellent sharpness and details on the whole flower, beautiful POV, composition and BG. It seems that you have taken this shot on a windy day and this, added to the soft colors, makes the picture look a bit sad. Very well done !
