Bumble Bee, "Bombus" (terrestris/lucorum) climbing over a couple of flowers of Sea Holley (Eryngium)

Bombus terrestris/lucorum are usually the first bumble bee's to emerge in spring, but workers and males of these species virtually impossible to tell apart unless they are dissected.

Generally, the smaller workers are from the earliest laid eggs. The males have many more yellow hairs, and a distinctive yellow nose. They are ground nester's (south facing for extra warmth)and only store a few days of honey, but are more opportunist than honey bee's and can cope better with food deficit. Even a successful nest may only have up to 250 workers...

Both species have comparatively short tongues for bumblebees, their foraging is usually on flowers with short corollas and daisy-type flowers. However they are not adversed to a bit of "nectar robbing"

If a flower is found where the nectar is too deep down to reach, they can bite a hole near the base of the corolla and push their tongue through and get to the nectar that way!!(often be seen on vetches)

They can travel up to 2 kilometres from the nest while looking for suitable flowers and will continue to visit these flower areas as long as nectar/pollen remains available. In flight, they can reach speeds of up to 50+ km/h

HI Howard
It looks like he's doing the splits on the 2 flowers. This is like some of my bee photos - I take many with their backs to me - they won't face the camera.
Thanks for sharing
Janice
