Grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis.

Introduced from USA /Canada to about 30 sites in the UK between 1876–1930.
Their diet consists of eat seeds, buds, flowers,
shoots, nuts, berries and fruit: they will also eat fungi and insects, birds’ eggs and the occasional fledgling and sausage rolls....

The habit of storing nuts in the ground is seen commonly in the autumn, but squirrels, not being the “mammal with the mostest memory” has to rely on scent to find them. As they DO NOT remember where they buried them!! Strangely they can be left/right handed…. (sinister/dexter)

They go through two moults per year, after winter and late summer, the body fur is usually grey, with brown/tan colouration, darker patches on top of head, back and flanks. Their underside is white, nicely finished off with a banded brown/black and white tail…very nice!! (This specie of squirrel does not have ear tufts)

Life span: - 5-7 years of age.
Digits: - four fingers and five toes.
Mass: - between 450-650g.
Size: - body 24–26cm long, tail 19-24cm in length.

Other facts…

They do not hibernate during winter, but become less active during bad weather and extended cold snaps.

Amazingly agile and persistent while trying to get to food, especially peanuts. They can hang upside down, run along ropes, swim, do assault courses and steal from bird tables... they could probably learn to ride little miniature bikes and skate boards if made available!!!

This rather rotund fellow was busy stealing a sausage roll while I was in my garden. The camera was resting on the wall next to the food; he ran up, took the food and ran off... This image untouched, apart from slight sharpen and mild cropping, he was about 2ft away….

Good thing to know as well…Grey squirrels do not appear to be susceptible to Squirrel pox virus, but may carry and transmit it. You Have Been Warned!!!!
