[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Cowslip, Primula veris, Member of the Primrose family.

These rather elegant plants are members of the Primrose family, but do not share the rather flamboyant petals of it's relatives. The plant can grow up to 30cm tall, generally in clumps on dry grassland or barren ground and scrub.

They are softly hairy, with basal leaves, wrinkly and dark green above, and pale green undersides.

The flowers are scented, and cluster on long leafless stems. They stand loud and proud above surrounding plants. The corolla is tube shaped, with a cup shaped opening where the petals protrude. The petals are a deep yellow with an orange marking at bottom centre of each petal.

The fruit forms in a capsule, long and oval, about 5-10mm long.

Flowering season, April to May, then they are gone........

Their is a similar species, P elatior, or "Oxlip", but this is a rarer plant and fairly confined to East Anglian woods.

I had camera trouble today, the dreaded "error99" showed it's ugly head, and the batteries in the flash gun also decided to discharge themselves... must have been the rain getting in...so, apart from lousy weather, I only had poor natural light, plus the camera fixed flash which did not want to work above 1/200 s.

I eventually managed to get a few images and this is one of them, not quite what I wanted in DoF, and a bit over-exposed in parts. But, sometimes you have to take what you can get and get it right next time.

ISO 100
Shutter speed 1/200
F-Stop f/4.5

Manual focus, straight camera diffused flash used, as was tripod, manual shutter and mirror lock.

Hello Howard,

We know spring is coming when these flowers appear.
I like your pov where the petals appear to be tumbling over the stem.
The light is excellent creating interesting colour tones and shadows.
IMO it is a little soft. I have done a little w/s which I hope you will like. Please tell me what you think.
