Charlock "Sinapsis ervensas" member of the Brassica family.

This is a dismal plant, coarse, quite ugly, the flower is meagre and basically a pretty grubby little thing. These are, rough, bristly and can grow to 1m but usually much less. The flowers are between 15-20mm with spreading down turned sepals.

Flowering season April-November.

It was once a very common weed of pastures and field margins. It favours chalky or heavy soils. They had become rarer due to mono-cultures and high use of herbicides, but are coming back thanks to "set aside" areas (the areas allowing more variations in wild life on farm margins).

This plant is very similar to wild mustard, but has less divided leaves, the flower being shorter than the seed pod.

I needed several trips to get a decent flower from this species as they are very very coarse and the flowers shed easily. This flower was on a cluster of approx 20 heads.

This particular plant was in partial shade on a meadow margin near high impact walking area, overcast and dull conditions, flash used.

ISO 100
Shutter speed 1/320
f/20
Manual focus
Remote shutter used, complete with mirror lock.
I may start using higher ISO's as a way of feeding more light to the sensor and reducing flash requirements.

Howard

Harsh notes on a flower that seems on the outset quite pleasent, much like this shot. I especially like the buds floating in and out of focus. Have a good weekend and look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour from it.

Jai
