Lords "n" Ladies - (aka Cuckoo pint) Arum maculatum Part of the Arum family. These plants grow to 50cm tall the leaves 10-20cm long, long stalked and heavily veined.

They have a distinctive inflorescence, a purple/violet spike (spadix) a cluster of red berries develops from the flower of the base at the base of the spadix.

These are poisonous VERY POISONOUS. The flowering season from April to May. They are found in deciduous and mixed woodland, preferring damp and richly humus soils.

They have an unusual method of pollination, small flies and midges are attracted to their smell (rather like carrion), the bugs slide into the centre where they are trapped. There is a combination of anthers and hairs at the base, and during a flies escape they unwittingly pollinate the plant. Towards the season end, the chamber becomes less slippery and the hairs shrivel up allowing pollen laden insects to find their way out.

This one was found on a woodland border in deep shade.
I decided to take this image without flash!!

The ISO was taken at 800, allowing more light to the sensor. I think it has given a softer image although quite well detailed and also given a much broader depth of field, although it doesn't stand out as well as when used with flash.

This image is entirely "as shot" no pp or cropping whatsoever. The image was only sized for upload on jpeg. Original image shot in RAW.

Hello Howard,
Technically this is a fine shot of a Wild Arum and interesting to see that this is uncropped, a good idea when using such a high ISO. The POV and lighting show the flower at its best, though the composition is food for thought.
Thanks for sharing both this and the good note.
Regards,
Ivan

Hello Howard,

I found this very interesting because I have plant which I have always called lords and ladies but it doesn't look like this! I researched it on the Internet and found there is a plant called Italian Lords and Ladies which has a sort of variegated leaf. Neither of these resembles my flower which has a spotted leaf! I'm going to have to do more research!

The image is nicely defined with excellent details of the 'cradling' leaf. The off-centre composition is spot-on!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your kind comments on 'Logs can be interesting!'

Hi Howard,
another great documentation of British flora, composed very well with excellent sharp detail and focus. There seems to be little or no noise here, much better than on my 400D at iso 800. Great stuff.
Paul

Hi Howard,
Excellent exposure, detail, color, and DOF in your shot of this poisonous plant..Great note adding some very useful background information on this one,
Thanks!
Howard

Hello Howard;

A very detailed photo and bio defined not know that this plant completely. A large scientifically very detailed commentary that you provide. Everything perfect. He has sometimes seen by my people a plant similar in structure, but the central part that emerges upwards was yellow. I think I have any photo. The look emn my file and the pubic so you can identify it as a good student that I imagine you are.

A hug

Josep
