Ladies Smock/Cuckoo Flower...Cardomine pratensis.

Member of the Cabbage family.

Very pretty flower, subtle pink and quite elegant. The stalks are a good solid green that compliments the pinks.

A graceful early spring flower of the meadows. Usually in bloom when the cuckoo's first arrive, hence it's name.

Unbranched, almost hairless short/medium perennial. The flowers reach about 11-20mm across. Pale pink to lilac, rarely white. They carry yellow anthers, the flowering season being March to June.

Found in damp grassy places, fens, woods and mountain ledges.

I am hoping this description is correct, as I have 2 plant identification books, and they give differing descriptions to size of flower/sepals!!

This one was imaged at a high f-stop and a slow shutter, just for a change!!

ISO 100
Shutter speed, 1/20
F-stop f/22

Very slight diffused flash used to take away the shadows at base of the flower caused by the sunlight. Good lighting conditions, but plant was in border of woods partially shaded.

Mirror lock and remote shutter also used. Shot in RAW, cropped, slight sharpen before saving for upload.

Hello Howard,

Splendid sharp picture of these flowers. Very good light and colours. It is a pity you cropped a little bit too much on the left, cutting one of the bud.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Howard.
I like your next wonderful close-up. First of all I am impressed with delicate and skill use of fill flash. You have saved natural sunlight and produced by it charming shadows on the flowers and underlined all tiny fine details of the flowers and buds. DOF is amazing as well as fine BG. My best regard and TFS. Great shot.
Alexei.

Hello Howard,
Superb sharpness and light management in this macro of a Cuckoo Flower. Excellent POV and composition too.
A beautiful reminder that it is time to look for the Orange Tip butterfly, as this is its main larval host plant
Thanks for sharing this top quality image,
Regards, Ivan

Hello Howard,
Very well photographed these flowers which I see also in my region, but I never knew their name. So I have to thank also for your note. I noticed that these flowers are very successful with butterflies.
Thanks and best regards
Anne
